ok i've done a good bit of playing today.

First up i've got diagnostics running which threw up a faulty injector code, traced that to a duff wire in the engine loom so swapped that out for one off ...

its the manual version of the TDI starter you need not the auto version.

Part number is 02A 911 024 or 02A 911 023R

Curious!

Maybe put in a blocking diode on the starter to ecu wire

Indeed! That was actually my first thought but i thought i'd try to fix the problem first rather than treating the symptoms!

The auto starters seem to be the same over the years but the bug&bus starter changed in 75 and again in 81.

Joel does the auto starter just bolt up to the swingaxle box or does ...

wiring loom was DIY with myself and Si (Roadrunna) but i've also got a second loom and ecu that was brought through ebay.

Both are early 4 yellow plug ecu's i'll get some pics asap.

Not 100% on ...
