Hi and welcome.
The legacy did come with a turbo, they did a twin turbo but this is to avoided from what i have been told. I believe the legacy also came with a single.
What do you want the bus to do, if your after economy then turbo isn't the route and they are more work to fit. Most people go for a 2.2 N/A legacy lump in a bus. If its power you want go for an impreza lump, EJ20T is the engine code. From research i have found the best thing to have is a camper with an 091 6 rib gearbox, this is IRS too but you can use a bellhousing adaptor which is much better job.
Thers so much info so i'm sure others will fill you in a bit more.
Thanks Ian. |

On a splitty which is already IRS'd with a Beetle box, then half the work is already done to convert to an 091 bx from a 2.0 bay. However, there's still the gear linkage and mounts to sort out. It depends what you're after out of it really.
I get loads or people who say 'turbo' when I ask them what spec Subaru engine they had in mind. I reckon at least half of them don't really want a turbo. Those who really do have already generally taken into account uprating the brakes and gearbox, etc to suit, are fully aware they'll probably get low 20's mpg at best, and intend to use their bus as a weekend toy. Those who don't typically hadn't really thought about fuel consumption or uprating the rest of the bus, and still plan on using it fotr holidays or regular long trips.
Assuming you have a 1600 Type 1 engine now, you probably have about 70bhp. A 2.0 or 2.2 would give you approaching double the power and 30mpg if you take it steady. A turbo could easily give you more than 3 times the power, which is plenty more than enough to break a Beetle box unless it's been uprated. The 091 bus bos is good for about 200 bhp as standard.
The 'Conversion Overview' menu on my web site, www.rjes.com, will give you lots more info on all aspects of Subaru conversions. If you still have more questions afte rthat, please phone or e-mail me, or ask on here. Everyone's pretty helpful! _________________ Regards,

Hello you,
I've just given CleverChap a nudge in this direction. He's got a 2.2 legacy in his Split & I'm sure he can help out a treat. (Awesome ride BTW)
I couldn't find his proper "how I did this" link - it's either on Exeter lawn mower or North Devon Dubbers _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Wouldn't YOU rather learn by someone else's mistakes? So would they.

Regarding Cleverchap's conversion, it is indeed pretty impressive. However, I believe he's using a 901 Porsche box???? Also, the level of modification work he's done to his bus is very high - up there with Rich Baker, and way more than most people would consider. With the rear chassis channelled, fitting a different box was, I imagine, a fairly minor challenge. While doing that level of modifications, it would probably have not really been much more work to fit a (massive) Porsche G50. _________________ Regards,

Hey northern lass. 2.2 N/A legacy is a good conversion to do and is a great improvement over the lawn mower lumps.
The basics have been covered above but if you want some inspiration then check out my build thread here
http://forum.exeteraircooled.co.uk/topic18-splitty-resto-with-twist.html
Best go and put the kettle on first
And dont forget Neil-C as he has an EJ22 in his splitty as well
If you want any specific advice once you've decided which way to go then just ask as were all friendly and dont bite |
