Feed = end of coolant manifold
Return = steel pipe from thermostat across the two cylinders on the starter motor side of the engine, ending near starter motor

thanks Richard. Happy

now im just left with a couple on the header tank... the top (small) one is the overflow (so i can vent that?), the big top one is the turbo return, the other big one (on its own on one side) looks like the main coolant outlet... so what's the small one underneath the overflow?

The small one that is in the cooling circuit coming off the top of the header tank is the rad top bleed.
The small one that is on the side of the cap bit is the overflow pipe, this must go to an overflow bottle. The subaru system is designed with a header tank which is too small, so the coolant expands when hot into the overflow tank, when it cools back down it siphons the coolant back into the system. If you don't have this hooked up properly you will lose coolant from the system every time you run it and will get air into your system and problems with running temps...

In my speedster I ran it for ages with a pipe on the overflow of the header tank into a 0.5l coke bottle. Seemed to work OK!

This time I will use a bigger header tank, may well end up getting an ally one custom made but I'd prefer to use a plastic one so I can keep an eye on levels..

If you can't connect it up somewhere else in the system to help keep air out of high points just blank the rad one off...
