65 splitty brake question!

I have a rather simple question, hope the answer will be as simple Happy

Can you put rear bay window (say 77ish) brake on a standard 65 splitty with regular gear box and everything stock suspension and transmission wise? Will it bolt right on, or do you have to make modifications?

in short no.
By regular box i assume you mean keep the splitty box. regardless....
the drums on the split and early bay are held on by the hub nut, on the late bay they are seperate so you cant simply swop them across i think they are also different diameter. A solution you might htink is to use the complete arm assembly however the length of the trailing arms is different so you cant put bay arms and use the bay brakes without cutting and rewelding them.

The usual way people do it is use the now rare 67-69 trailing arms retianing the wide 5 stud pattern) and couple this to a 1303s IRS gearbox but this is an IRS conversion - i suspect beyond youer requirements!.

If you are simply doing this for braking gain I dont think you will gain much at all. Most IRS conversions are done for better gearing / losing the reduction boxes etc rather than to imporve brakes.

Well, I'm going to put a 69 bay front beam, and I want to go with bay disc brakes, the reason I wanted to go with the late bay rear brake was to have 5 by 112mm wheel all around! So by your answer i have 2 solutions run wheel adapter in the front or in the back!

it would cheaper to buy a of the shelf large 5 disk kit like csp than a rarer early (68-69) axle to bolt to split chassis and all the late beam bits ie trailing arms & brakes etc to swap on to it and a set of adaptors for the rear or use a set of brazilian bay front disk hubs these will bolt straight on to the split kingpins dont forget to change the master cylinder to a disk type one and repipe the van or the front brakes will stick on causing them to burn out

As I have more parts than I can count, I already have everything to make the early bay beam conversion. Any idea on how to keep the split bolt pattern in front and the ball joint beam! Apart from the wheel adapter I mean!

I know that 13window! What I want to know is: What are my options if I don't want to use 2 set of wheel and still have bay disk brakes on my 68-69 beam! Any way I can have 5 by 112mm in the back? Or is the only option is to have whelel adapter in front so as be able to mount 5 by 205mm in front?

to run with 5x205 and bay discs you have only the option of using adaptors unless you want to spend a lot more money on a CSP wide 5 disc set up.

Personally i would prefer the bay set up as it uses standard and easily available parts.

the other possibility is to chose some wheels that are available in both 205 and 112 pcd. Maybe like BRMs / empis then at least it would sort of look like the same all round as i doubt many people would notice! it might also look shite but its just an idea!

I think I'm gonna run the bay wheel in front and stock wheel in back, this winter I'm gonna look into mercedes rear disk brake conversions, I'll have 5 by 112mm all-around then
