Hi My name is Britt and I have just purchased a Morphadyte Bus. It's a 65 Panel body mounted to a 71 Bay Chasis ( I know they don't seperate like a Beatle but this guy welded them together) and I have the Legacy engine ready to swap into the Bus.
I've read 6 pages back and couldn't find anyone who has put Weber Carbs on the Subaru. Can it be done, are there any manifolds made for this? I know the FI is better but I know my limitations and i don't do electrical very well, I plan to take this Bus on several long distance drives including Alaska. I own a conversion Bus now www.roadcow.com and feel comfortable with the carbs and it cleans up the engine bay. Thanks for any help or comments.

Thanks,
I know it will fit and remember Toms post as well. Thank you for the feedback. I'll have fun with this one. I'm prepared to make my own Manifolds if need be. |

Did he widen the chassi or narrowed the body? Looks like widening on the pictures.
Cool anyway. I like the split but it's so much smaller than the T2 and I need the space. |

I just found some '92 2.2 Legacy files (US Spec) one of which is for a single carbed model.
What year is yours?
I'm at work ATM and the files are at home, so if it might be useful you'll have to wait a few days. _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

'78 Bay, 2 litre 091 box, EJ20 NA & the ashtray's on the 'right' side.

Why do you want to go Carb? It can be done BTW
But you need to use a Dizzy as far as I know (will stand corrected on this)
I have '90 2.2 Legacy wiring diagrams (Multiport Injection)- just mailing them to your mail account _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

| I know carbs and plan on a pair of Weber 44s. I want to take the Bus to Alaska and if the FI breaks down I can't fix that. I know how to repair a Dizzy or carbs, those are my main reasons for wanting Carbs. I'd forgot about the Distributor though, thanks. |

Hello Roadcow,
Yes, it can be done. I looked in to it a few years ago, and started to design some parts, but decided it's not something I'm going to pursue. EFI is the way forward. It's infinitly better in every way, including reliability (when installed properly!). I won't be building anything else with carbs, but it's each to their own I suppose.
As far as I know, the only EJ series engine sold in Europe with a car and distributor was the EJ18. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a bigger capacity version in the US, but I have a customer in Honduras who made his own using an EJ18 dizzy and a rejetted EJ18 carb. I'm pretty sure he said that was the only way to do it with the parts avaiable in Honduras, but I may be wrong.
The distributor is on the end of one of the cam shafts, and the good news for you is that it bolts straight on to the injected engines too as they have the same heads up to 1996 / 7 in the UK on J20 and EJ22's (possibly later in the US). Nobody makes manifolds for webers as far as I know (although I still have some castings half designed). You'd need to make your own. As making inlet manifolds goes, they are not that complex. You could use a cross bar linkage from a VW carb kit quite easily.
The biggest problem you will have is the compression ratio. An injected engine will have a rather high ratio for a carb'd engine, and will therefore require a higher than average octane fuel to avoid detonation unless you reduce the ratio some how.
Has your hybrid bus really been made by grafting a Splitty body on to a bay chassis? That's a big job! Some were made in Brazil with a splitty front and rear end and sliding doors, but I've never seen a DIY version before! _________________ Regards,

Hi Richard,
I was on your website last night looking to purchase a Bellhousing but there wasn't a price. I also read the contact us page and see that while you are more than willing to answer emails and phone calls that you seem to get allot of both and I didn't want to add to the fray. If you have time to PM me here with a Bellhousing price for a 78 Bay 002 Transaxle to the 2.2 Legacy Subaru ( yes the Splitty has a late Bay Transaxle) I'd be very appreciative.
I agree that EFI is far surerior to any Carb but I want to simplify my engine to a place where I feel comfortable driving it long distances where no mechanics are available and be able to rely on my own abilities.
Somebody sent me a link to Indiana Aircraft Engines and they use an 82 Ford Escort Dizzy when converting to a carb.
Yes I've seen the 2 year Build pictures where this guy installed the 65 Splitty Body and nose onto the 71 bay Chasis. I've paid him to install the Bay Walkthrough back into the Bus and remove the Bench seat partition. I will also put in 2 swivel seat bases and install T-25/Vanagon Captain chairs with adjustable armrests. It will also get a Pop Top of some sort, maybe the 76 Westy rear including roof metal grafted into the Splitty Top and a Dormobile style front Rack. It will have a fold over rack above the Pop Top to hold my Canoe, this will pivot at the drip rail so the canoe when mounted can pivot over to the side to allow the Pop Top to raise with the Canoe still attached.
Interior will be a T-25/Vanagon Full width bed in back ( I measured I have 2" to spare.
Thanks for your info and comments. |

Someone else mentioned they could not see the price list on my site the other day. Please could you try this link directly, and lem me know whether it works, as the price list page was working fine when I checked the other day. Strange. http://www.rjes.com/html/prices___ordering.html If it does not work, what browser are you using?
I have PM'd you the prices for the bell housing and the shipping in £ and $.
The guy who grated your splitty panels on to a bay must have liked bodywork fabrication! It looks like he's done a good job from what I can see in your pics. Are you sure a Vanagon full width rear seat will fit? at floor level, they are something like 80mm wider than a bay.
It sounds like your bus will be a real hybrid by the time it's finished, with a combination of Dormobile and Westy camper parts too!
Using a Ford distributor sounds like it's making the job more difficult than necessary when there as a Subau distributor which bolts straight on. Maybe there is some aircraft related reason for using a Ford one? I you have access to a machine shop, it probably would not be difficult to use all sorts of distributors. _________________ Regards,
