What sort of revs can a turbo diesel engine be run at for a considerable length of time (say over an hour or so)?
Would around the 3000rpm mark be OK? |

what diesel?
i had a 1600 N/A golf diesel in my bay and I drove that at something like 2800-3000rpm (at a guess as I have no rev counter but when it was petrol i did) for several hours for 225 miles with just a couple of breaks, should be fine as long as its uptogether well maintained and the cooling system works fine _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Just any turbo diesel in general really.
I suppose ragging it along at max revs for hours on end wouldn't do it much good but wondered if keeping it around the max torque revs would be OK.
Thats about 2400-3400revs for the VW 1.6TD according to the info i have. |

vw say the industrial diesel engine maximum constant rev limit is 3600 rpm so i go with that to be honest power tapers of after that especially on the longer stroke crankshafts of the bigger diesels if your reving much higher than that you need a higher gear! _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

That means about 60mph on a 1.6 lawn mower gearbox and 68mph on a 2litre box.
Cool. |

As a diesel engine is limited by the manufacturer to the maximum revs they think it will cope with whilst still being reliable
It stands to reason that flat out for extended periods of time is well with in the spec of the motor
It is slightly different if it is under extreme load i.e. towing a 20 ft caravan or something
But under normal conditions with normal weights just go for it
The reason for lower revs is fuel economy
Get a more powerful motor, higher gears, and get more miles to the gallon

pretty sure the peugeot PSA engine is goverend at 5200 rpm!
major advantage over the vw unit , this is even a problem with vw tdi and aaz engine |

My Dad has a citroen 1.9tdi car and the revs go up to 5,500 max
So I prsume that other Pug diesel tdi do as well
But you can always turn up the pump a little and get an extra couple of hundred rpm

I'm driving my father inlaws vauxhall corsa (i think) ex postie van CDTI or summut atm and had it revving over 6k !! most bizzarre It actually shows red line at 6.5k I was a bit concerned at first as I had put a tenner of diesel in it and got paranoid that it was in fact a petrol !!! had to stop and flip the bonnet to be sure _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)
