Ive done the head gaskets on my ej20

but iv got a question for u tech minds out there...

All cams have been kept seperate with cam wheels ect, but does it matter which way rounf the cam goes back in?

I hope you know what i mean by that...

i mean how they go in the head....
I know which cam went where and which wheel,

I just need to be sure there is no particular way like there is on some of the vw's

thanks

Nope, I'm lost.

4 cam - not done one so can't comment.
2 cam - you don't have to remove the cam to do the HGs. Remove the head assy without disassembly, all bar the rocker cover.

Best you just put it back the way it came apart! I would at a guess say that the cams are not sided but will differ from inlet to exhaust! Dont quote me ive never seen one!

i too havent done one either...

If you knwo which cam went where then i dont really undersastnd what the question is?

I assume your talking about cam alignment/ timing? if so then the cams will be timed correctly once you align the cam wheel and bottom pulley marks to put the cam belt on.

the reason you align the cam on an air cooled engine is because its driven internally off the crank so it has to be aligned with the 3 dots.

On the subaru it is externally driven with the cam belt so the equivalant alignment will be by making sure all the marks are in the correct positions when you put the belt one. that will align the cams with the bottom pulley/crank.

On the other hand, it's not very difficult to make a new timing. It's well described in the workshop manual. If you Google you'll find a couple of download links for the manual as PDF.

I don't really understand the original question either, but this may help:

You need to be very careful when turning the cams on a DOHC / quad cam with the belt removed. Like pretty much all DOHC heads in which each cam is driven by the belt or chain, if you rotate one cam while the other is not in the correct position, the exhaust valves and inlet valves can hit each other, and they can easily be bent. You need to tuen them very carefully so you can feel if the valves touch. The proper procedure shows how to set one cam in the right osition so you can turn the other (in the right direction) without ricking the vavles hitting each other.

If at all unsure you ought to get a copy of the proper procedure. The DOHC belt arrangement is the same on all EJ series engines, n/a or turbo, so you can download the manual for ant DOHC EJ series engine.
