Sorry, I forgot you've got tom's cooling system modification fitted. I have no experience with them, so I have no idea what is normal and what is not normal with them.
Swapping a gearbox with the engine in situ usually means lowering the front of the engine slightly so the box is low enough at the front to slide out under the chassis. With my mount you can do this by undoing the Subaru engine mount nuts and supporting the back of the engine on a jack. I have never tried on a Syncro though, and as you say, it may be different with your mounts. _________________ Regards,

Got a mail for Tom, and it turns out my cooling symptoms are quite normal. Nothing to worry about! im releaved! =)
Turns out that te subaru pump is not quite up for the job at low revs. especialy ideling speed.
E have a modified smallcar mount i think....so i dont see how it would be possible to change the box without pulling the engine out.

Subaru cars are verry comon in this area as the hills are steep and we get a lot of snow.
After seeing and listening to these cars i notice that my engine is making mouch more of a ticking noise than these other engine does? I started thinking perhaps i have fitted the cambelt slightly wrong or perhaps there could be something wrong with my vaulve lifters etc?
Also when i walk around the car, the ticking seems to be louder as i walk past the LH air intake than it is at the RH side air intake
The engine has got a good "omphf" and is running great....no weakness symphtoms or anything.
Is this just me beeing paranoid, or could something be wrong?
The engine is a 1995 mod 2,2EJ......
Is this ticking normal? _________________ Subsyncro =)
Make a valve adjustment, my first guess is a rocker (lifter) that's too loose. It's an easy operation, just find the measurement values for your YM. I don't remember if it's different for inlet and outlet, but at least it's 0.20 on one side on my -97 EJ20. http://www.primenta.se/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=42&Itemid=56
-95, it could be piston slap but that's only something you hear when it's cold or when idling.

I did already post a "valve clearances" post on here but I can't find it now.
If you have a manual valves EJ:
Inlet 0.20 ± 0.02mm
Exhaust 0.25 ± 0.02mm
Right if it's a manual, remove the RHS cam cover, looking into the engine bay from the rear (assuming a single cam) note: there's an arrow on this 5 spoke cam pulley.
Arrow pointing at:
12 o'clock - # 1 @ TDC
3 o'clock - #3 @ TDC
6 o'clock #2 @ TDC
9 o'clock #4 @ TDC
These are Subrau cylinder notations NOT vw _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

If you've managed an engine swap you shouldn't have any probs checking the valves (assuming yours are manual adjustment).
Whip off the covers and give it a quick check.
Is it just a tick, tick not bang, bang sort of noise?
I'd imagine Subaru would want to charge you about 1.5hrs labor. _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Yup you need "Feeler gages" (blades is a good description )
Have a listen to the valve covers to see if it's coming from there. Use a bit of wood or something as a stethescope
Whip off the valve covers and take a look, if they're manual they look like lawn mower valves.
If they're hydraulic ones, try changing the oil first and letting it tick over for 30 mins.
Does sound like your valves might need adjusting.
Here's a link on how to do HLAs (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters)
