VW Disc conversion on a 69 bay

Noob question, please be gentle

69 bay on drums, wanting to go to 17" rims and discs all round. Is it possible to use stock VW Golf Discs, hubs and calipers (inc rear handbrake etc) onto the bay? I've looked at kits, but would much prefer to use stock VW components if possible.

I wanted to go with 17" Brm's from the new beetle, so i bought the wheels and then got the biggest brakes and calipers that would fit underneath the rims, i went with 312mm brakes with a 5 * 100PCD.

i then had a plate made up to bolt to my spindles which would mount the calipers to my spindles...

the hardest bit is finding someone to make the caliper mounts...

Hi, yes, I read your restoration thread, took ages, but has given inspiration to go tdi but back to the brakes, I've got a bay, not a split, are the spindles the same? will they accept golf hubs? or do I neet to modify the hubs too? Cheers, Nick

Looking around it looks like vdubengineering do a billet hub and caliper that fits the bays that will take the VW discs and calipers! does anyone have any experience of these?

V dub engineering is based in Canada. I've spoken to Lanner in the past regarding a Porsche disc conversion for my type three. They where very helpfull and always quick to respond, although I never broguht anything as being a type three I had to send my spindles over there which was for my way to much agro.

As they are based in Canada be prepared to pay through the nose for the P & P and also dont forget to allow for custom handling charges too.

I have VW Corrado VR6 callipers on my bay-didnt need any adaptor plates-I just sent off my bay hubs and spindles and FUTBUS machined my uprights to except the new calipers and sorted me out with some VAG discs that slot straight on. He also rebuilt all my hubs and upright and assembled them together so all I had to do was bolt the lot on to my swing arms.

Give them a shout they are very helpfull, good and affordable.

What master cylinder did you use. Are you running a servo?

Are you using VR6 calipers on the front or rear?

What are the discs do they fit under 15'' wheels

I'm just getting all the bits together for my brake conversion.
Specification so far:
Mk3 Golf GTI master cylinder and servo
Mk3 Golf GTI front brake calipers
Machined front spindles to mount calipers
Ford Galaxy brake discs vented front and solid back
Machined rear hubs to take discs
Home-made adapter to take galaxy rear calipers

The only thing I'm still worried about is the brake bias valve, mines disappeared! Has anyone else got rid of theirs?
