golf engine in bay

can any body help with ignition wiring,i have mk3 golf 1.8 carb model
i will be putting engine in bay window ,but do i need all engine bay wiring ? ecu ? etc just want to keep ignition simple if pos..sorry if posted wrong its all new to me

The mk3 golf never came with a carb.

What it did come with is a single point fuel injection unit that looks similar to a progressive carb.

So you'll basically need the ECU and all the wiring that runs from it to the engine, the coil and associated wiring, to be honest I doubt it would be that difficult to strip out and fit in a baywindow van.

on the side of the engine above the gearbox there is a multiplug for the engine, I am not 100% sure if that does everything for the engine, but by doing a bit of wire tracing you can follow it round to see where bits go.

Something else you'll need to do is alter the fuel tank on the bay for a fuel return and also fit an electric fuel pump ( would be a pain to use the golf one as its tank mounted inside)

I think the big thing is that your wanting to keep things simple and do an engine conversion, diesels can be relatively simple and some petrols can too but taking on a project such as this you have to be sure you want to do it and have the know how to do things or the willingness to learn.

The fact you want to do the project is a step in the right direction

hi thanks for reply i have whole car but have just got webber carb and manifold and points dizzy ,as car ignition goes in ecu ,,so i should be ok ..will try and sort this weekend

See I think you would be better going to the trouble of keeping the Fuel injection setup as it should make it overall better on fuel and better warm up during the cold weather etc.

I am currently putting a golf engine in a bug and am going for mk2 fuel injection because of better power and fueling, I deffinately think its worth the extra effort

By the way, where abouts are you as I might be interested in a few mk3 bits if your scrapping the car

Hi Dude, sorry its taken time to get back to you. Basically with you making the engine carb/points dizzy, I was kinda after the fuel injection setup.

That basically would mean the ECU, sections of the wiring loom (from ECU to engine and anywhere else it may go like the data socket in the centre console) the dizzy and the injection unit, not sure what else is connected but basically the stuff to make something Fuel injection.

I'm not affraid of the electronics stuff and was thinking of either using such a setup for either my mk2 golf engine or possibly for an lawn mower engine.

If you can let me know a price and then maybe we can arrange something even if your not exactly local to me!

if your fitting a carb use the electronic ignition system from a 1.6 carb mk2 golf it has its own wiring loom to link the trigger box, coil and dissy it only needs a earth 12v and ignition feed to run
