Rack & pinnion steering

Very nice. I've often thought that that would be a good way of doing the conversion-so its really nice to see it done.

Wohoo! Just ordered and paid for my steering arm, next weekend I'm down the scrappie to find me a rascal!
I have seen a couple of racks on ebay for £25, but I reckon I can get it cheaper.

Just to let people know, the old Citroën AX's and even the sacks have the same style rack as the the rascal with the single arm.

Oh also, I've done about 200 miles on my rascal rack conversion and I have to say that it feels great, I don't get any wondering around the road like i used to get with the old steering box and the van goes were you point it and it feels very smooth to steer.

The van drives very well but I have noticed that my turning circle is quite wide now but this really only effects me when I'm parking.

For the money it really does transform the drive.

I have trial fitting my rack but it looks like I need to extend the rascal bar that connects the rack to the idler arm.

What I missing in the picture it all looked standard

yes you will need to extend the link bar - this is pretty easily done tho - had mine machined so i could bolt on vw ball joint one end and rascal other for about £20.

Another tip to get equal lock and when measuring up is to make sure your link bar is at 90 degrees to the steering idler so it gives equal push and pull each way

I installed a hydralic clutch last year looks like that will have to come out in order to get the steering rack in

just installed a 915 box so might go back to cable or move the hydralic clucth.
