Hello
Ok I have a little Jigsaw puzzle I'm currently trying to solve and welcome any advice!
Putting an EJ25 with a 901 gearbox into a Splitscreen. Have the KEP adaptor plate so should be Ok there.... maybe. Cooling and wiring loom aside.
The Creative IRS is nearly in but the 901 doesn't seem to sit in the correct position, about 20 mm too far back. Anthony, my brother in law is talking about cutting the torsion bar to make it fit. This sounds dangerous! Anyone any ideas?
Would like to fit 944 S2 brakes all round as I have a chance to buy all the bits at a good price. The question is, will these fit with some engineering and has anyone done it. Almost everything has been done its just gathering the info.
Thanks in advance and sorry to sound a bit amateur hour. Had a long trawl through the threads here.
Thanks

Anything can be done with some engineering!
944-stoppers are uge, don't forget that you need bigger rims afterwards.
BTW, yes, it has been done. |

i take it you are going to use the early bay arms on the back with the CE IRS? if so then fitting the 944 s2 brakes is possible but expensive. I looked into this at great length and designed lots of bits to make it work however machinig was prohibitvely expensive (the spline on the hub mainly) so instead I weldded the 944 s2 clevis onto the torsions tube then the 944 alloy arms bolted on - however the bay geometry is different to your split.....so do lots of checking first.
as for cutting the torsion tube - i take it you hsave an alternative plan for springing the rear? like coilovers or something?
hope that helps a bit! |

Hi Simon,
if you havent already, have a look through " cleverchap's" build thread.
http://vwkd.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?t=121&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=cleverchap&start=0
He used similar components to you so it may be of help. Unfortunately he has emigrated, but occasionally pops up on this forum.
I run a 915 box which was also to long, so my solution was to move the tubes forward by 40mm and then extend the trailing arms and cut and re drill the original split spring plates to put the wheels back where they should be.
I used trailing arms from a bay so wasn't bothered about cutting them as they were cheap and plentiful if I made a mess of them.
Hopefully the snow will have cleared next weekend and you can have a poke around and under mine. I run disks on the back, but not 944 so there are other options out there.

to make the 901 fit correctly your going to have to cut the centre out of the torsion tube due to length and probably cut of most of your you new frame horns and engine cradle off as well. i've just fitted a 091 to my split and had to cut the frame horns/cradle out to get the gearbox at a reasonale angle and hight _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

Thank you for all your input thus far! Its getting easier in the brain department for my brother in law, who now is ready to get the grinder out on the Torsion Bar.
Cleverchap sold me the 901 gearbox, so I blame him.
Still a mystery as to
1) what drive shafts fit on the 901 gearbox, am guessing 911.... what length tho..
2) how to make 944 brakes fit, or choosing another option on the rear.
Any suggestions that would work with the Creative IRS?
In retrospect I wish we had gone 1303 gearbox, but we already have the KEP plate, unless someone wants to buy an EJ22/25 KEP plate and 901 gearbox?
Best Wishes

The other option is to use the bugat5speed nosecone which reduces the length by 25mm.
Or if you know someone that can TIG weld, do what the guys at bug-box.de do and cut a section out of the original nosecone and weld flat ally plate over the hole.
There are some pictures on this page http://web3.ichwobbledich.com/cms/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=160&Itemid=83
Chopping out the centre of the torsion bar is a pretty permanent mod, I'd avoid that as you then have the hassle of strengthening the chassis rails as I don't think they would be strong enough to support coil overs without bracing (unlike bays the chassis rails are only U section) |

Thanks for the great information, we may go for the compromise on the torsion bar and go new nose cone.
I think we are gonna mate the gearbox and engine and offer it up to see how far back everything sits, will post up pix.
Cheers
