Confused By My Adapter Set up !

Was stripping my gearbox down last night to switch over to my new 2ltr box and realised that my set up has no spacer and uses the original 1600 input shaft !!

I had a brief look at the fly wheel and tried to compare with my standard TD one and it does seems like it maybe a little deeper but not a lot if anything ! (trying to measure using my finger not usually a very acurate gauge !)

Anyway here are a few pics of my adapter plate.. how does it compare to everyone else ?

Your adaptor looks like a mirror image of both of mine.
My Covin one and the spare CVH one are exactly the same and I think from GBE.

Here's some info that might help.
Adaptorplate thickness = 40mm
Spacer thickness = 25mm
Input shaft sticks out from gearbox face = 35mm
All measurements are very accurate using vernier.

Dug the old engine out from it's covering, first time it's seen light in 2 years....

You can see my starter is on the oposite side to yours

Not sure if this will shed any light on the matter . . . . It's a strange one

I've just remembered... I've got a 3rd adaptor plate in the loft WITHOUT input shaft ? ? ? I wonder if it's the same as yours ? ?
Just have to get up there and find the thing now

odnt know if this will shed any light.. ford crossflow and ford pinto have starters on oppisite sides

Here's some pictures.

I can only assume this adaptor plate uses the old VW starter motor as there's no starter fixings or machined area on it. It's also very thin compared to my other 2 Ford adaptor plates.
There's NO extended input shaft with this kit either by the way.

Interesting pics there covin my adapter seems to fit very similar to your non loft version !

Bit more investigation required here me thinks !

Just out of interest JP, are the clutch plates the same on the non turbo and the turbo engine? I know the diesel engine I've got has the original ford clutch plate and it's got a different spline pattern to the original 1600 input shaft. Might be that the conversion kit you have has a vw clutch plate which allows the use of the original input shaft?

Yes mine does use a VW friction plate... I assumed that they all do maybe not !

Ello ello to all. Been away for a few weeks and just spot this thred-very strange one JP as your plate does look very similar to the GBE kit. I knoe the kenedy kits look very similar but use a new modified fly wheel instead of spacers and possibly input shaft-not sure but I'll be interested in finding out!

just got an adaptor off someone on volkszone and it's got the starter on the same side as yours JP. It's made by hewland engineering who do the vw gearbox's. It also didnt come with a clutch release spacer but it might still need one and there is an extended input shaft.

I'll try and get some photos up

There is another guy on volkszone who has an adaptor for sale if anyones interested.
