Isn't the bus box massively undergeared with a diesel though? What revs are you running at a real 70mph - your avatar makes your bus look very low so you can't have stock radius rear wheels to help the gearing?
With a diesel I'd suggest the way to go would be a long geared Porsche 5 speed, probably about the same amount of work as fitting the bay box to a split. |

@13window, i'm with you on the torquething. there is something else people tend to forget, it's the mass of the van.
A split weighs more than a bug, hence it takes more effort to move it!
Therefor i like things a bit on the stronger side, thus a 091 6 rib.
Mine weighs even more, beefed up chassis, rollcage,....
@paul_f, cogs can be replaced with other ratio's.

I know that, but as far as I understood you couldn't gear an 091 to run a 4th gear that was anywhere near as tall as one in a T1 box.
For a diesel where max torque is below 2200 then you want top gear to be geared so that you are running at 70mph(or whatever your motorway cruise speed is) at that point to get the best economy. |

the box has a 0.70 weedle top gear combined with the 4.57 diff and 205/50/16 rear tyres this gives me about 70mph on satnav at about 3200rpm ish? max power on this engine is at 4200rpm so its well under that and i have read vw recommend not running the 90bhp industrial tdi engine at more than 3600rpm constantly and obviously in industrial use this would be sat in still air and on full load so im fine all day long at 70mph, 3600rpm is about 80mph so i would be ok at a constant 80mph and upto about 90-100 in bursts in theory. the porsche gearbox requires the rear torsion tube centre to be cut out loosing the original vw spring this would then require extra strengthning to mount coilover rear dampers. plus the 915 box would be nearly £1000 untested, plus i had the old 091 cp gearbox on the garage floor as it came out of my old bay due too jumping out of 4th gear so was the ideal free box to rebuild with a new 4th

It should be a gearbox from a 2 ltr t2 from '76 till '79, there are alot of id codes on the net but which website is correct

No t2, just; VW T25 / T3 / Vanagon Gearbox Code
The 2 ltr 091 6rib was used from '76 till '79
Heard anything from your friend......?

Yesterday a bit flabbergasted, a bloke who ones a shop in selling t2 vans in the Netherlands states that 091 6 rib's does not exist!
I'm mistaken by the fact that one rib is casing so it is a 5 rib

Hi Paul
I've spoken to that friend of mine and unfortunately he's sold his boxes, last one for 250punds. He lives in Poland and the shipping to Netherlands would be quite a lot I think. To ship to the UK is about 70pounds which is ok but just because I know some guys who travel there and back quite often and wouldn't mind to take some stuff for a few quid. I don't know anybody who travels to Netherlands and to use DHL or UPS etc would be a lot of money I believe.

Sorry to hear the boxes are gone.
You could ask your friend if he can look around, 'cause lots of trucks from here localy are doing Poland on a daily basis.
I could ask such a company for transport.
