Hi,

I have been lurking for some time now and have almost decided to do the conversion. I have a 1972 westfalia and would like to put an in-line VW 4 cylinder in it.

I noticed that most people have gone with the 1.8. I am having trouble locating one with low KM's. Will the 2.0 aba fit or do I need to switch the head in order for it to clear? I believe the 2.0 is about 15mm higher.

I don't have my bus or the motors available to measure things up. Was hoping someone else does.

Thanks

Craig

fitted with a 15 degree's adaptor plate the aba engine will fit in the engine bay ok with no head clearance issues. the only issue you might run into is the inlet manifold this could touch the top of the engine compartment if this is the case maybe this could be cut and tig welded at a angle? the aba engine isnt so common in the uk our 2.0 golf of that vintage had a non crossflow cylinder head hope this helps a little?

Thanks 13 window.

I found this thread today however on the samba and it seems to imply that the 2.0 litre is too high even with the transmission mounts lowered.

I am going to contact the guy to confirm.

i've got a 1z 1.9 tdi in my split at 15 degrees (original golf angle) these engines have the 16mm taller block as well as the late petrol motors and there is plenty of clearance in my van only thing thats close to catching is the breather valve on the rocker cover to the strenghting rib that runs side to side underneath the over engine load area. are you sure the samba guy is running a 15degree angle as i have seen some usa adaptors that run the rabbit/golf engine straight up 0 degrees which would make the motor a couple of inches higher at the head. your other option is vanagon diesel parts i ran a 1.9tdi in my last 79 bay using a 2.0 cp bay gearbox with vanagon diesel bellhousing, clutch and flywheel, sump, oil pump etc this setup runs at 50 degrees and clears by miles(search for my old threads on build) i've also run a golf gti engine in a vanagon diesel at 50 degrees and it ran with no problems just a thought

just looked on samba thread i think the difference is that most of the late busses in the pictures on there are originally type4 engineed vans and so had the carb inspection hatch in the boot floor and the hatch frame that hangs down towards the engine, most of the uk delivered vans are type1 engines so we dont have the engine hatch fitted and have a flat boot floor above the engine giving more cylinder head clearance area? easy answer would be to do the same as i have done in my split graft a larger one in from a vangon

Well I found a donor car. It is a 91 GTI with the 1.8 and digi II. Only 160,000 kms on it. One owner car and every receipt since new. Rust got to the floors and front strut towers real bad.

Now I just have to wait for the weather to warm up to go in the garage and pull the motor. Today it was minus 22 C.

Stay tuned.
