Well guys, a lot of trials and tribulations but the buggy got towed to big bang last weekend for a days drag racing.
All was well with the system filled with water and bled properly.
The time comes for my first run, i set of the line with a wheelie in first, then a wheelie in second.
Damn i just missed third so i'm slowing down trying to find it.
Cross the line in a dissappointing 17 seconds but not too bad i suppose for my first attempt.
Anyway a few more runs and the oil temp has now crept quite high so i let it cool for a bit, my final run of the day was very poor and when i crossed the finish line my oil temp was at 106c and water was 102c, now i don't think they are drastically high but the engine being an EJ20T has developed a rattle from the bottom end so i'm going to have to strip it now.
Despite this i had loadsof fun |

Updates: Stripped the sump off and to my dissmay i found lots of metal flakes in there now i'm pretty certain that some or all the bearings are shot so i started stripping the motor.
Got the point of having the heads off so will pulll the motor and split the case next weekend.
More money but i can't take it with me lol.
Cheers Ian. |

just get another bottom end,if the wrong or no antifreeze has gone in the bolt heads can rust and not all come out, they can be drilled and helicoiled or spark erroded but not worth it unless you are gonna upgrade imho _________________ vwdrc class rep

Ian
You could do with identifying the cause of failure before putting another engine in, it could happen again for the same reason if you don't.
If you need any help when you're stripping the block then you know where I am.
Might also be worth having a chat about how you have everything set up on the buggy too.
What oil did you have in the engine ?
How long do you have to sit with the engine running before each run ?
Do you know what the charge temperatures are ?
Do you know the AFR and EGT ?
You can usually get the head bolts out using a good quality socket, you may have to tap it on if the bolts are a little rusty. The top of the bolts can start rusting quite quickly if the car hasn't had the right mixture of coolant or has had water without corrosion inhibitors, sometimes it looks worse than it is. I'd hope that the bolts on yours would come out ok as it is a phase 2 engine so not as old as some others out there.

Thanks for the response Ken,
I think one of the problems is the fact i never changed the oil, yeah i know stupid and all that but for some reason it never crossed my mind so the oil that was in it was totally unknown make, grade and age. I think this is where my problems started.
Charge temps, no idea, wouldn't even know how to get a reading to be honest although the pipework feels cold.
AFR again no idea how i'd work this out without a computer or wideband O2 sensor.
EGT never checked these either to be honest.
I cracked to bolts off tonight, they came undone reasonably easy so will split the case on saturday and see how it looks.
It may need a new bottom end if not i'll do the mains and big ends.
Any idea if my engine will be an end thrust or mid thrust?
Cheers Ian. |

Phase 1 and 1.5 engines (v1 - 4, Model Year to 98, Impreza) are centre thrust cranks, phase 2 are rear thrust (v5, Model Year 99 onwards). Model year 99 started in 1998, these were the facelifted cars with the later style front bumper.
Looking forward to having a look at it tomorrow. |

You'll remember for next time, and probably be a preacher for the Order of Regular Oil Changes from now on.
I helped with a Ford engine swap a couple of years ago and only just found out they never changed the oil from the stuff that was in it at the wrecking yard.
Althugh I know it had been changed since it makes me wonder if that is why the oil pressure warning sounded after a short trip towing Trailer: The Car Slayer for a short jaunt.
It's a 7x5 that even empty our MPEFI 302 Ford can't tow faster than about 75km/h without consequences. Evil trailer. |
