There's no extra pressure fella ;-) pressure is a function of force over area.
I'm sure you've followed my design & read my mumblings ;-)

Well now I am getting maximum force over my area, init lol
lol@followed your design, I am sure I chatted with several people at vanfest about 3 years ago about this and kinda copied how 13 window built his at the time, think I'm the only person running skateboard wheels at the front though
For my 1302s with the golf motor I am going to build it of a similar design with flat rads and pressurised boxes in a couple of locations on the vehicle as its a system that works, quite whether it will be able to keep up with a hot GTi motor (one thats possibly forced induction!) I dont know, something I am going to do though is take the oil to water cooler out of the system and am replacing with a mk1 GTi oil to air cooler to maybe take some of the strain off keeping the main part of the system cool. Every little helps! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

So I have got ot make a decision on a rad for my Zetec. Looks like 2 x 1.3 golf rads work ok. Any other suggestions before I press the buy it now button on fleabay?
when joining the two rads together with the 180deg pipe, is this suseptible to air locks? does it need an air bleed back to the header tank?
One rad seems a simpler solution provided it is big enough.
32mm inlets would be nice to save pipe size changes.
Any thoughts if you had the chance again! |

I guess I cleared my airlocks by driving round the local block which includes a steep downhill and uphill section to work the air out, cant say I have had massive problems with airlocks to be honest, the van has never really gotten hot even under alot of load.
Basically what I looked at is the size of the radiator that currently cools the engine I use, then look at how much grill area the vehicle has and thats kind how I worked out how big to make my scoop and make sure I had enough capacity.
With my system, had to fill it up a couple of times from scratch and each time I have filled it up as much as possible, run it and filled it some more, then gone round the block when its warm and opened the thermostat up and driven up/down the hill road (also brings the engine up to temp pretty quick!) at most normally I dont have to add a whole lot of water but it does get the air out the system.
Think I worked out my system takes about 12litres of liquid!
Some of the other rad setups on here have different solutions to joining radiators, in such a way that you cant get airlocks, for instance you could run them parallel instead of in series meaning you have no 180deg bend to worry about have a look at some of the other setups and you should see what I mean _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

ive never had any air locks with the 180 degree joiner between the rads as its much lower than the header tank (which must be the highest thing in the system) so the air will naturally come to the top as its filled, i always drill a 4mm hole in the rim of the thermostat if it doent have one from the factory this allows the sytem to fill correctly with the stat shut. _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

Well it looks like the 180 deg bend is tried and tested so no point in reinventing the wheel I am happy to follow. Its a neat solution so that is me sorted.
I like the 4mm hole trick in the thermostat 13 Window. I wish I knew that 15 years ago when my other half had a Renault 21as it was a .....ard to get the air out of. Renault must have known that as the supplied bleed valves in the OE rubber pipes!
Just read you other post on 32mm mdpe polypipe to get to the rad. Seems like a good idea as most alternatives seem expensive.
MDPE has a melting piont of 120-130 dec C I guess you van has never over heated. The zetec water pump / rail outlets are also near the exhaust manifold so may need to get away from the engine in rubber to be safe. |

13 window. Been giving a bit more thought to you mdpe pipe idea and it is growing on me if I run the section near the exhaust in someting with a bit more heat resistance.
Did you flare the ends of the MDPE pipe use, an olive or groove the pipe to connect to rubber joiners to prevent them sliding off under pressure? |
