right ive cracked it i think starts poo hot runs alot better still backfires a bit but i think that maybe down to no airfilter on ,had enough now for the day (8 hours for 1 bloody wire lol)thanks for everyones help

Filter makes no difference TBF unless you're driving through rocks, sandstorms etc. It mearly filters crap/restricts airflow, which the ECU compensates for.


Now, what really might make the difference is....reading the stickies (at the top of this section), which do ask you to post the year of donor engine

I know you posted the ECu number etc but it ain't worth bobbins with Scoobies

Engine, Donor and year.

You might owe me a "slab" and JP (well it's his site) some cookies after.
I'm negotiable on "slabs" - "Lava java" and "Morgan's Spiced"

right ive been out and fiddleing with the van now starts great but seems to be hunting on idle asthough timing out also still backfire when you rev hard and then take foot off gas.so ive checked all my leads an plugs and they are giving a good spark ,so been doing some searching on here and my doner was a automatic so wondering if the belt has jumped a tooth is there a way for me to check that without taking the pully and plastic off the plastic has degrees marked on it cheers for the help

Disconnect the battery to reset the ecu and try again, have a look http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.php/Knowledge/ECUResetloads of info on the restting and learning of the ecu.

The hunting idle is a really common problem, it's the Idle Control Valve needing a good clean out.
They gum up with crap and start doing that.

The back firing on over run is probably also related, if the ICV isn't shutting properly on over run you will get the popping and back firing.
Also a muffler leak or just a muffler system that is just too free flowing can cause it too.

Right had a look at the icv tonight and it turns out i had a air leak on the blank off pipe so resealed that and it now idles great and only pops a bit. Thanks for all your help
