while looking for the reason behind the occasional back fire and lack of power my legacy 2ltr turbo is suffering from i came across this..
..Looking through a google search and the power that is ebay these twin bolt jobbies are stupid money ( well, for two it's as much as i paid for the whole engine).
So i was wondering are the single bolt one's the same?

Oooooooooow  Twin bolt ones. Never seen those before.
I was going to post on your build thread, if the single ones are compatible then I fit the newer new age single coil packs.
Or
Seeing as your delving into unknown territory, why not convert to the single coil pack wasted spark system from the post 1996 ej engines.
Be cheaper then buying the single coil packs which are just prone to cracking time and time again.

It's definitely a lot cheaper going with the single wasted spark system, just need to see if it's plug and play or if i can just change the engine loom.. Don't fancy having to change the whole loom...

just had a quick look,
its not plug and play to go wasted spark, some years the single coil pack has a inboard ignitor and other years have an external ignitor.
it would be a case of seeing what you can get,
However to fit either system it would be a case of just modifying your current loom so go for it.
I've done a newage coil pack conversion to my engine, was easy to remove/bypass the ignitor, plus I got four STI coils packs for a steal on ebay.
there is plenty of information on scoobynet and google, can't be much more help though as I'm supposed to be working at the moment

Cheers kai, jumped on the scoobynet forum.. haven't looked into the wasted spark way, but have seen the newage coils conversion and may go that way if i can get them cheap enough...

There is information about the wasted spark conversion out there, I recall readying about it.
There is a few good right ups on the new age coil pack conversion, but they are pricey.
Also look on Scooby net as there are sometimes already converted beware coil packs for sale on there. I think they sell @ the £100 - £150 mark.
Let us know which way you go and how you get on!!

Found the info on the wasted spark conversion, lot of mixed reactions on that one so think i'll go for the newage coil packs when i have the cash...
In the mean time i need her back on the road asap so will just try and get standard one bolt jobbies as cheap as poss...
god this thing has been sent to test me...lol

I chose the new age coil packs as I got them cheap.
However there obviously must be a reason why Subaru dropped the wasted spark system in favour of the coil on plug design. I know people mention that the new age coil packs give a better charge under boost.
Unless your building a race car solely for performance I'm is the wasted spark system would suffice.

Funny thing is ,while browsing through i found quite a few 400+bhp mosters that were running the wasted spark...Go figure, it's all beyond me...
Im just going to get the cheapest thing i can get my hands on for now just to get me up and running..
