hi guys

I have a '71 bay with the 3 screw rims. My question:-
has anyone changed the headlight for a sealed unit with angel eyes?
I could go the Hella original bowls route but at £90 each and them not really that fantastic I begrudge buying them.
If anyone has any ideas, hints, tips I'd appreciate hearing them..

Welcome to the world of dated technology.

If you remove your headlight does yours have the three tabs inside where the headlight was? If so then you can go for mark one golf headlights but don't expect miracles from them.

You can go for H4 HID bulbs which will give off more light but your going to be restricted by the beam pattern provided by the 7inch headlight. Admittedly the lights with the crystal lenses ( these use the metal bowl to reflect the light which is rather then old Skool reflected lens type) are the pic of a bad bunch. Also HID's are technically illegal.

Otherwise it's up rated bulbs and wiring looms.

There are two more solutions I know of. One is mega pricey (LED) and the other is way cheaper but takes engineering skills and would still be illegal.

For reference I'm running non angel eye crystal lens with a H4 HID, driving at night is barable but my daily driver has a xenons and the other new car is gonna have kick ass LED's which are worlds apart

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately i have the older van so only 1 tab inside. So i think i might have to ether get the welder out and put 3 tabs in the bowl or come up with something else. i take it that yours is the later version and are your angel eyes the 7 inch sealed units like these.

I'd look for the golf units personally as that's what I've got fitted to my vehicle.

But in saying that I've no idea whether the defender units are compatable with the VW style lights. I do wonder if they can be used. The defender lights use a metal ring clamp that goes around the edge of the light. The VW golf light has a completely different style of mounting and adjustment. It's possible that the defender type light could be used with the VW light mounting but I've no idea yet.

I think I'm gonna go for the Mk1 golf lights and see how they look with brighter bulbs and new wiring. off to volksworld show, so will be looking at what i can see there.
