Radiator sizes and pipework material

Hi, I'm looking t o move my radiator from the back of the engine to under the body on my 78 bay with an ej22. I'd be interested if anyone knows the dimensions of the usual rads fitted in this position? Fellows speedshop have a lovely aluminium rad but don't think I can stretch to one yet so might have to either relocate my existing or find a second hand one that will offer adequate cooling? Also I'm wondering which material to use for the pipes? Reading the Rjes site he advises against copper so I was wondering which other materials people have used? And whether its rigid or flexible? Also what sizes are most suitable?

Hi Dan,

I don't have any measurements on me, but anything that fits between the chassis rails is good! VR6 rads work, I have a Citroen Xsara one, other have Jag XJ40's.

Concerning piping, I used central heater pipes for the stretches and hoses for connections between components. Using metals piping you already loose heat on the way to the rad, but risk rusty pipes after a while. Hoses are easier to route, but more expensive. I have seen people use T25 pipes as well. They're made of some sort of plastic, don't know what kind, though.

I have an XJ40 jag rad
pipe options: some have used pvc stuff you pipe up water troughts etc with on farms but its not that flexible, 28mm copper is easy to work but expensive and there is this theoretical risk RJES mentions, I have a set of MGF heater pipes too I might investigate using - they are steel so will eventually rust but are cheap and easy to modify.can get heavy duty rubber hose too which JP on here is using - I think its reasonably cheap and flexible.

I went with 28mm copper, fully aware of the risks involved however I'm sure using coolant reduces this as well as preventing the contact between the different materials by using hoses between the materials which is going to be essential anyway.

I spent £78 on on 9 meters of pipe along with pipe joiners to act as end flares to hold the rubber pipes on. Burrowed a pipe bender off a mate. Was 3years ago I think.

Oh and my pipes are fine and clean inside with no apparent corrosion going on inside.

Thanks for the replies, sorry for the delay but my password stopped working.
I am planning to use 35mm copper tube as much as possible and use hoses to join where necessary. I have been trawling the Internet looking for suitable radiators and a fiat Ducati one looks quite easy, quite long and wide enough to fit between the chassis rails also both outlets are at the same end so should minimise the amount of pipework required. I found a great website which I use for my kit car bits, www.nfauto.co.uk they stock loads of stuff that I need so I'm sure it'll help someone else out too.
