Hi,

Having spent months being inspired by you guys, and gone full circle from what started out as project to simply strip and rebuild by existing lawn mower engine, I've now decided that TDI is the way forward...

I do need to pass some of the blame for this madness onto Mario at MV Engineering (top bloke for TDI - look up his TDI build!)... I popped in to pick up a table for my cousin's camper and next thing i knew Mario had sewn the seed of TDI engines into a bay... he is currently working on putting a 3 cylinder Polo PD engine into a baywindow which started my thinking... and then i stumbled across you guys... I am sure i will be calling on his expertise very soon...

Before i start, i have to say my mechanical skills are fairly raw, so this could be an interesting project...

So here's my plan, where i hope to learn from all your experiences and get a reliable, economical bus to go touring in... I'm setting myself up for a fall but my target completion date is Spring 2014!

I currently have a 1969 baywindow.

I was after a 1z/AAZ engine, and stumbled across a bloke selling a 1997 Seat Toledo, with a 1Z engine, 'only' 100k, one lady owner for last 10 years, full service history... £250... so that was the start of the project...

The engine seemed a fairly easy choice, but then came the gearbox..

Long story short, i decided that the best way to get the most out of the engine would be to pair it up to a TDI box... and having been inspired by splitbusvanatic, and then reading up on the brickyard on Tim's (from Ultimate Engineering) upside down passat gearbox... so i now have a 5 speed passat gearbox in the garage too...

I did enquire about getting the ratios changed in my existing box but it was starting to look very expensive and to cap it all, the bloke from Bears (who was very helpful, dont get me wrong) said it still wouldnt get the best from the engine. I know the passat box isnt going to be straight forward but i'm hoping that the effort will be worth it...

So that's the plan anyway, currently clearing the garage ready for the fun to begin...

I will be relying heavilly on information in this thread so thanks again for sharing all your knowledge (and pains...) , hopefully i can do the same along the way...

In my opinion.
The 1.9tdi was THE best engine that VW ever produced.
Hopefully I can crack on with my own ASAP.
Caught with big changes in work at the minute.

First of what may be many questions..

Am i making life hard for myself by trying to mate a 1z from a Toledo to a Passat gearbox? I was reading through Tim's thread on brickyard last night (cant remember how many times i've read that thread now, but each time i seem to read something i missed the previous times... Eeeek

)

So the view on there seems to be that the flywheel and clutch will not work from a transverse engine with an in-line gearbox... am i right to therefore think that the starter from the toledo wont be any good either?

Would i be better off getting a whole passat to start with, or is it just going to be a case of getting a passat flywheel and clutch and then i should be ok?

Hoping to start stripping out the toledo engine this weekend but just want to check i'm not wasting my time before i do so...

I've done my share of engine swapping between passats, golfs, audis etc and the rule of thumb I've always followed is that the starter, flywheel and clutch should always stay with the gearbox and then be fitted to any engine you need to fit to that box.

Well... this project never really got going Sad

Now selling the donor Seat Toledo complete with running, low mileage 1Z engine for somebody else to make use of... please see for sale section.

Car still has MOT so easy pick up and dive away - £250
