I see some people are using a remote thermostat. How is it plumbed up? _________________ 1969 type 1

They just fit inline on the hot/outlet side of the engine with some sort of bypass plumbed back in to the cold side.
Some people just can't get the stock Subi thermostat to work properly, usually because of poorly laid out heater system or non adequate heater bypass which keeps the thermostat closed.
the hot side thermostat like the BMW one is a "fix" for the situation _________________ 1974 1303 Germanlook Suba-Beetle

Joel, have to disagree with you there!
I've use the e30 thermostat to very good effect. There are several problems with the subaru system when used with large volume cooling systems, these are made particularly bad in cooler climates. The way the bypass and thermostat flow does not work very well and it makes the system a real pain to bleed. All I have to do is fill up with coolant, no bleeding required at all.
I have previously posted a diagram of how to plumb in the thermostat on here and on my website.. _________________ http://www.ricola.co.uk |

Well admittedly it doesnt get quite as cold here, it was winter solstice yesterday and I still drove home at 9:30 at night with the A/C on
only to keep the windscreen demisted though.
There are ways around getting the stock subi stat to work right.
Tom Shiels flange is perfect if the heater is sapping too much heat from the return, or use a turbo water pump with the extra fittings.
Mine is brilliant left completely stock, even in the coldest weather it sees (a few degrees above freezing) it still gets to temp in under 5 mins and is a fill and drive system with no bleeding.
Its people using non genuine stats that causes problems, particularly ones with no bleeder rattle pin in them. _________________ 1974 1303 Germanlook Suba-Beetle

| Ricola, did you have to modify your thermostat to get the feed from the thermostat to your heater matrix, or is there an outlet already built into the thermostat? |

the thermostat comes in a casting with 3 ports, inlet, outlet and bypass... _________________ http://www.ricola.co.uk |

I've been looking at the QED Rover K series remote thermostats. When they open they also close off the bypass, forcing more coolant to go through the radiator. sounds like a good idea.
Did you consider one of these? |

that's pretty much what happens with the e30 thermostat from memory of its internals.. _________________ http://www.ricola.co.uk |
