Hi.

Going AFN flipped into my '79 Jurgens. Engine and box offered up and driveshafts connected to get position for chassis mounts and engine bar fabricated. These are all done now. Should get the radiator mounts etc done this week. The difficult bits to come. Gear linkage and wiring. Any advice on these would be greatly appreciated

I converted my bay with a 1Z TDI and a mecanical pump (hybrid JX/1Z). It gives a good milage but the standart CP-box is geared too low.

Can you give us some details of your conversion?

- Does the engine bay give enough space to move the drivetrain forward due the the angle of the driveshafts?

- How did you shorten the bellhousing?

- How did you manage the hydraulic opeated clutch, which mastercylinder did you use and how did you mount it?

- What thickness do the adapters for the driveshafts need to have?

- How did you adapt the gear linkage? Is there a proper way without the use of a cable operated system?

- Is it possible to keep the original gear stick?

- How did you get the VSS for cruise control?

- Has the passat-box a switch for the light in reverse gear?

- are there any bay-specific difficulties in this conversion?

- what milage do you get?


And most important: Can you please load up pics of your conversion?

The whole assy has to tilt down forwards and my driveshaft angles are set at 17°. The cv joints are angled slightly rearwards as the front of the box is very close to the torsion bar housing.
Tim from ultimate engineering machined to bellhousing.

Clutch master is from the donor passat piped in 4.75 mm copper into a bay rear brake hose then into the slave cylinder.

Driveshaft adaptors bought from ultimate engineering.

Gear linkage is via porsche stick and cables. Very simple to fit.

Passat box has a speed sensor built in for the cruise, no separate vss needed.

Reverse light switch already in the box.

Bay specific issues are, Where to put the radiator, the crossmember under the fuel tank is in the way and needs to be cut... there's lots of issues to overcome.

Well it works. Just come back from a trip to the South of France and Italy. Did 2400 miles with no issues. I do need to relocate or modify the intercooler as the inlet temps were getting high when the sun was out but all good. Avg 40 mpg at 60mph. Sits lovely at 70 though and pulls up the hills nicely.
