I still find it very strange. With my brothers VW golf with 1.9 tdi (90 bhp) I can tow a trailer with 2000 kg, and still cruise easily at 100 kph on the highway. And I don't need to shift for a hill or something....
are your vans that heavy??? Is 5th gear very long?

1500 Kg without load. Wheels being 14 inch could play a part on mine. Also the saloon gearbox. |

1500 kg.
The documents on my passat say the empty vehicle is 1371 kg, and ready to drive (full tank, driver) it's 1471.
The difference is relatively small in my opinion...? What speed were you going? the passat is quite aerodynamic, where our vans are aerodynamic like a brick...

And that's just kai's wallet ....
There's something like 20 different tdi ratio'd gearbox's .. but you might be better with a 20vt petrol box..

I think you mean 2000kg unloaded and you have a max loaded weight of 2460kg 
as for the golf tdi pulling a heavy trailer with ease, it does not have the aerodynamic properties of a bungalow that we have  that makes more difference than weight
the problem of the higher fifth gear, imho, is that the engine does not stay in its ideal boost range when an incline etc is encountered
I spent nearly a year number crunching with gear ratios and tyres sizes before I got my 3H box rebuilt with a better r&p and not the longer 5th gear
once a tdi drops out of its ideal boost range it virtually drops off a cliff, power wise, a remap might give a larger torque range but it will be trial and error |

I finished (finally) my gearstick setup. It really works perfect. Interior looks virtually stock (minor modification at the base of the stick. Will show later on).
Cables are also hard to disguise.....

looking forward to seeing this. I haven't gone near it yet but I always thought it would make sense to put the base for the shifter UNDER the cab floor, not on top of it!! |
