1970 T2 bay crew cab

Hi All, new to this forum, really fancy a Subaru conv on my crew cab was thinking to cut an inspection hatch in load bed for access to engine and to fit a rad under there, also to move the battery inside under the rear seat so as to leave lots of room in engine bay. My question is there much or any welding required for the rjes engine support bar as I have no welding skills and nowhere to do it anyway, also will my standard gearbox take the power from a 2ltr n/a.
