Thanks To Alex for this one.
I got my engine conversion plate from CBE Tel: 01270 841 081. They do conversion plates for Ford, Vw, Citroen/Peugeot and Vauxhall all to fit old skool vw. The kit costs about £250 and takes a week or so for them to machine it for ya.
Summut from another website.....
If you are fed up with the VW beetle engine and want to a change you will need an adaptor plate to match the gearbox to the engine. The choice of engines wide and varied e.g. Ford / Subaru / Renault / Alfa etc.
The adaptor plates are available from :-
GB Engineering ltd
Westfield
Wybunbury road
Walgherton
Nantwich
Cheshire

They cost around £250 and normally consist of an aluminum adaptor plate, replacement drive shaft, bolts/studs. Cos the plate is aluminum it is advised you fit helicoil inserts to prevent the threads stripping when you bolt up the engine. You will then need to sort out a cooling system by fitting radiators etc. It does mean you can fit a decent heater. It is also wise to fit beefed up gearbox mounts as the heaver engine with greater torque will put a lot of strain on the original mounts - mine ripped off the front mount from the chassis. _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

| or like ive done, its qutie simple really take the bell housing of the engine your going to convert to and the vw bellhousing down to your local tool maker / precision engineer tell them how much distance you want in between the two and if they are any good hey presto. you should be able to fit nearly any motor to your box you choose. see........ the possibilitys are endless! the sme applies to the fly wheel mine got a 32mm spacer from the crank the bell housing is 32mm thick ive still got a 210mm vw clutch flywheel and starter motor. |

well 50 quid gets you a big enough lump of ally billit, and about 150 gets the job done on the cnc machine, it only took about 50mins to make but about 3hrs to sort the design and create the program. i made a working prototype from steel first to make sure the motor would fit and run with the gearbox properly which was not pretty but it seemed to work. having had the billit one made it looks cool when you can see it but is machined to a perfect fit so all in all about 4-450 all done with a flywheel spacer and kennedy clutch kit,
nuts and bolts.
its the most expensive part of my conversion but no one makes a adaptor plate to fit my engine so i had to get one made, and i did. |
