1.9 td pug engines....what to look for...

im going from VW to pug power but not in the usual way.....this isnt because im changing from subaru power to Pug in my camper but its sort of related.

until the van is finished i need a trusty steed to transport me around cheaply and get me and my boards (and mates) to the coast and be a workhorse for my house renovation. Up to now ive had a passat estate sport but my heavy right foot makes it difficult to keep costs down and tbh its too nice to trash with tip runs and heavy building stuff.

so in short im looking at a new car to replace the passat......and it happens to be a pug 806 aka citreon evasion synergie and Fiat Ulysse. Ugly as sin but cheap, more luxurious than a panel van as and powered by the trusty pug diesel. i cant afford the HDi which is fine as I plan to subsidise my fuel costs with a bit of veggie oil so im looking at the 1.9 TD

so what are the weaknesses of the 1.9 TD/ what should I be looking for // avoiding etc. any tips would be welcomed.

what sort of milage are these units good for?

what other vehicles are these units shared with? im thinking mainly in the event that i buy a car with a knackered engine what could i raid for parts at the local scrappy since none of the above models are that common.

any other tips muchly appreciated.

Ok the Pug Engine XUD is a solid old beast, my last engine which went in my bus had done 400,000 miles. The bottom ends are very solid but the cylinder heads can go porous, which you'll notice as the compression gets into the water system and blows the water out in spectacular fashion.

The engines pretty tuneable Google it. you can tweak the pump and the turbo itself.
The engine came in the following carsCitroens BX 1.7 ZX volcane TD early Xsaras, Xantia Synergie, relay and the other Citroen van

Peugeot 405, 205, (1.7) 306 406 806 Peugeot Expert and Boxer vans.

Fiat use it in their small commercials and their people carrier.

Rover 218 used it in 1.7 guise.

There's quite likely a load more too, but you get the idea that its a popular engine.
Not bad fuel economy wise, but if you fancy running a little bio type diesel make sure you get the Bosch Pump rather than the Lucas pump.

get the cam belt and idlers changed on the button otherwise they will snap their belts.

has anyone run veggy oil in a pug 1.9td? i've considered trying to run my van on it before but not found conclusive evidence that it will run with it as standard?

I've run my old bus engine with veggie oil no problem and my old Espace 2.1Td with the same too, (same basic pump)

I won't be held liable for any problems though. My daughter was trying to run her 1.8D Escort on the same and it killed the Lucas pump. Oh and I wouldn't run it on 100% veggie oil either about 50/50 was as much as I ever went. You start to need preheaters for the oil before it gets to the pump above that.

Ive run a couple of cars on veg oil before and had mixed success. It will block injectors!. I made a heat exchanger that pushed the oil/fuel around an extended piece of radiator hose before getting into the engine. worked well, very cheap.
What is the code for these xud engines?
Also any advantages to fitting a 1.7? better fuel economy?

glad to hear i dont need to be scared of 150k+ cars as it looks like thats all i can afford atm!!

if i go with a veg oil car ill make sure to choose a more 'disposable' cheap one then!!

do you reckon itll still block injectors even with a 50/50 mix? or say if i used it only 25% of the time?

Its a slow build up of deposits. 50/50 should be fine. give it a good run through on just diesel (maybe thined with a tiny bit of petrol) evry once in while and it will be fine.
Remember to register as an alternative fuels producer with hm customs and excise though wont you.

ive heard you can thin with a teaspn of white spirit too. will keep all posted on progress / how many pumps and injectors i get thru!!

first of must actually buy a vehicle!!!

i take it what fiat call the JTD is the same Pug TD?

Yer I've heard that a bit of petrol or parafin is very good at thinning the veg oil to save injectors etc, I also know a few guys that run there diesels on Kerasine and other strange things to good success. The common problem seems to be the starting but that shouldnt be too much of a problem in this lovely weather.

dont thinf the fiat engines the same ,,, friend of mine was running his 306 on veg oil no probs , fuel is heated by the stat housing on most pugs after j reg ? ,,,,,, HDi's let down by fuel pumps ,,,,,,, not many of these about now , were a very good car in the day because of the engine 1961

ive been looking around a bit at said people carriers and am now thinking of stretching to an HDi for the economy and not bothering with the chip fat.....good idea or not?

anyway this is all still some way off as I have to flog the passat first.....
anyone want a 98 passat sport estate? very careful owner

as you'll all know i like to go from A 2 B with no bother , so on that note i'd say no to the HDi ,, pumps not up to much same as some golf tdi's ,, can nak up useing red fuel , brothers fixed 406's and an audi , tdi that had cherry in the tank ,,,then there's some that will be ok , i just do'nt want to take that chance , if i did then i'd have to join a break down rescue service ,,
here's the kitchen tonight handles next ,, back to work on me bus
