getting some conflicting advice on using a bus box in a bug with an ej20t... couple of ppl on aussieveedubbers saying that the ratios would make it a bad combo with the engine in a bug!?

i know doppleganger for one is using that setup... is it pretty much stock ratios etc?

need some advice here guys as im starting to second guess my choice in boxes....

Great for a drag bug (as doppelganger is using it), but I wouldn't use one in a street car, you'll be revving the nuts off the engine most of the time...

Do a gearbox calculation on both cars here.

I just did one for my car, and discovered the gearing is to low. See link.

Well, the original engine has to rev exactly the same as a Subaru when using the same gearbox, doesn't it? Wink
Don't care too much what other people say, go for your own feeling! I'm fitting my bus with an EJ and will change to bigger tires to get better highway RPM. But, the beetles were not designed for speeding so why be in a hurry? Happy

I made a gearbox calculator once, you can find it at http://www.primenta.se/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=4&Itemid=39. Press the button in the bottom with the text "Ladda ner" for downloading.

Regards,
Sven

Uhm...yeah...but that is not the question, is it? It would be interesting to compare the subaru gearbox with the bus box. Wouldn't it?

Sounds interesting, but isn't the main problem the gearing of the (strong) R&P? I guess you'd still have the strong case..

Well, the question wasn't about the Subaru box either. Of course it would be a perfect situation if the Scooby box was easy to fit in a beetle (or bus), but that's not the case.

I don't think the RPM will kill the engine, the engine will kill the gearbox.

exactly ,thats why im using a bus box in my drag car.

but ive been using scooby engines in vans for nearly 4 yrs with no box problems ,so does that mean its a van wheel/tyre ratio issue against beetle wheel/tyre ratio???

No, why should it be?
And why should it be problem of using a bus gearbox?
Frankly I'm not sure what you're arguing about as it seems that we agree on the subject...

hmm ok so whats the consensus?

i want to use the bug for drag, but also want it usable on the street. so whats the best solution?

i already have an rjes bellhousing kit, and really like the idea of using stock subaru clutch/starter etc... but i could sell it on if absolutely nessacery i suppose Sad

doppleganger - what would your drag car be like to drive on the street?
