Cold starting trouble

My EJ22 in my bay has been running fine for over a year. Yesterday it started fine in the morning then in the evening it wouldnt start, smelt really strongly of fuel. This morning I cleaned the plugs, span the motor with no plugs in and started it with easy start and the fuel pump off. Once running it starts and stops fine.

Once its cooled down it just wont start and floods so much you can see fuel dripping from the headers.

Any ideas? Temp sensor is my first though?

Sounds like injectors are sticking open (from what I've read on other sites). Fuel is dripping into the bores overnight.

That had crosed my mind but I thought it unlikely. Is it common on these engines? Surley it would be unlikely to affect all 4at once? Any idea how I can test this?

I have also thought of maybe the fuel pressure regulator. Maybe it has too much fuel pressure so is overcoming the injectors?????

All guess work really....... I just hope I make it to Bug Jam and back!

I read it a while ago on Aussies, have a search on there.

The tank in a bay is above the engine & gravity has it's wicked way. Petrol only needs the tiniest of holes to seep through.

You could always make a little clamp up to get you by. Mole grips usually work Wink

If it cures it you at least know what the problem is.

I have found that if I bleed off fuel pressure before leaving the bus its OK to start the next morning so injectors looks likely. I did look at the fault codes from the ecu and got (apart from all the normal VSS etc codes) code 47. I dont know what this means as its not in any of my books!

I will try and get some new injectors and a fuel pressure regulator and see if that cures it.

What year engine?

Code 47 gives Injector on 1984-86 FI models

On 88 and later it's
14 - Fuel Injector 1 (Legacy, Imp, Justy & SVX)
15 - 2
16 - 3
17 - 4
18 - 5 (SVX)
19 - 6 (SVX)

I think you can have the injectors cleaned but not sure. Remember to get new seals.

That was ages ago and its been fine since but I supose it could have been. You have a good memory!

I beleive the engine in from a 1996 car but I supose it could be older!

Bug Jam was good, if a little damp! Bit of a pain grubbing underneath the bus to stop the engine! i will have to rig a switch on the dash until I get some new injectors and seals.

Interesting. I've not heard of this before, but the tank is below the injectors in Imprezas and Legacys, so if an injector was to leak when the engine is off, syphoning would make it a bigger problem than it would be in the Subaru. When pulling Subaru engines out of scrap cars, the fuel rails are often still pressurised when they have not run for months, so I guess the injectors usually resist the fuel pressure when the engine is powered off.
I got wet at Bug Jam too, but we went prepared, so still managed to enjoy it ! There were two Subaru powered Bays in the show and shine. Was one yours? If so I think I spoke to you.

Mine wasnt in the show and shine, in fact I didnt get a chance to go there. Mine was parked in the pits, white with blue metalflake with last years race number on the side windows, VWAE156.

I have some seccond hand injectors now, They seem to be stuck fast in the fuel rail though! I will get them out, get then cleaned, flow checked and new seals then I should be all Ok again.

Problem is now I can get round the problem theis is no real urgency to fix it!
