What is would be the general consensus of opinion?
I have a auto T25 with currently a peugeot 1.9n/a engine in. Its a little on the slow side and its broken. The original conversion is poor(not a famous Phil one) and i need to remedy this. Now i would like to put in a subaru engine although there is possibly a problem with the box or the tourque converter. now my options are as far as i can see,
1 convert bus to a manual get a rjes kit (i have a doner lawn mower bus(t25) for the parts)
But how much will be involved and is it that easy?
2. Get KEP kit from the states add it to my auto with either a replacement gearbox and or just the torque converter if found that that is just the problem....
Both ways will involve lots of work, selling my beloved GT Beetle and seem to work out at the same cost.
opinions please. I do know that the RJES is the better way to go but it will take extra work but how much?
Cheers

actually for some reason i thought you were talking about putting a diesel in - it was early in the morning!!! the thing is my answer is now gona look biased due to the above requirement...but honest - its not cos i want your driveshaft (alth i do )
I used RJES stuff and would defo go for it over Kennedy - not least becasue of the support etc that rich offers over the phone -but also the quality. ITs IMO 'engineering' wise the best way to do a conversion. For me it was an easier decision to make as i was going for a turbo...and rjes kit used a scooby clutch, starter, etc etc which will all give greater reliablilty due to their design for the use. Of course all this means a swop to a manual - but it sounds like if you have a spare van this wont be too costly just time consuming. Hopefully said van will be the 2ltr variety giving you the best ratios
so how much for the drive shaft..... |

I believe it is the 2 ltr lawn mower variety. which i presume will only be a four speed. but it the pedal assembly etc which worries me but i suppose if i have everything it won't be too hard. i quite like an auto box and i believe it has done little miles but i want good solid reliable driving.
I'll check up and when i'm some way close I'll let you know on the drive shaft..... |

You could subscribe to:
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/subaruvanagon/
and ask on there. They've done loads! (Not many RJES jobbies, if any though)
You need a Yahoo e-mail (free) and it's really only a text based forum.
Brent Weide (http://www.weidefamily.net/vanagon/) and Tom Shiels (http://www.subaruvanagon.com/) post on there quite a lot. They're very knowledgeable.
Read Brent's pages, I learnt loads from that site. Forget their header tank set ups though (from what I hear) go for a "flow through", much less grief on a Scooby conversion
Rich's bell house is a nice bit of kit. Basically everything is stock Subaru or VW. Just the adapter plate for the release bearing on a NA EJ is custom, dunno about turbo'd lumps. _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

It made me laugh when i saw your signature for the first time the other day. Any body who has owned a camper without an engine conversion in will know exactly what you mean.... |

if you stick with auto you have to use an adaptor plate _________________ vwdrc class rep

Yeah i know i did speak to RJ a few months ago about it not realising at the time what went into the swap.
Fuel consumption is a worry with an auto box, so i know manual will better for that. Well i say worry i'm not that bothered as it will mainly be driving around town with the odd trip out here and there.
I just want somebody to say ah you can't do that because the third grease nipple on the flux capacitor will need to be grafted from the manual to the auto or nah its all baby gravy and its all straight forward.
I suppose i just want my hand holding.............
I'll kick my arse into gear shortly.... |

On a nice cruise from Kent to Devon I get around 27-30mpg. I'd think 18-20 around town (rough guess) using a 2 litre (091) box and standard wheels. (Shell Optimax seems worth the extra cost BTW.)
When I went out with a Doris with a 1600 T2 it cost around £80-90 to do that trip in 2000 ish. It costs me approx £70-80 now, including driving around when I'm there & I'm not doing 55mph
Any Scooby around town isn't great on fuel consumption, well unless every set of lights are green. Red lights are fun
Chav baiting's addictive.
