Couple of questions to do with engine temp.

I have been doing some engine run up tests on the drive and when the temp gets to 105 deg C the engine note changes dramatically. The first time this happened I switched off immediatley and let the engine cool for a while. Everything seemed OK and the cylinder heads were not overly hot, so I tried again and exactly the same thing happend when the temp reached 105 deg C.
Would this be the thermostat opening and the water pump having to work harder?

Just so I know if its all going to sh*t, whats the 'average' running temp for an EJ22?

Christ on a bike, mine hasn't been over about 95-98!
Your fan should cut in well before that and cool it without it being under load.

Thermo opens at 78 and should be fully open at around 82 (IIRC)

Arse, thought someone would say that. I'm only sat on the drive just trying the system out so no airflow over the rads what so ever. Sounds like I have air in the system......theres a surprise

Ummm, not road legal?
Mine bleeds a charm now but still likes a little spin around the block to get the rest of the air out.

Penny to a pound most of your airlock is in the matrix lines and the cold back from the rad to the block. (Hence my flow through header is basically in the matrix lines)

Be aware though that the stat sorta takes a while to open so local water manifold temp could be way higher.
Check the return to the stat is hot!

I'll ask the obvious: You have checked your 'stat in hot water?

How many litres of water in there? Mine's approx 12l.
38mm I/D hose holds approx 1.1 litre per meter BTW

was gonna say how long is your bloody drive !!! but from experience of the cooling issues I had on my beetle that definately sounds like an airlock especially if your stationary.... just keep bleedin and bleedin on a slope till you cant bleed anymore.. by touching my pipes at various parts of the coolign system i was able to locate locks.. i even tried to set it up originally without the thermostat to eliminate this entirely and ensure that the cooling system has the basic ability to circulate without any other factors..
wen i finally got the temp sorted on the beetle with the combination of natural airflow and fan i have never been over 95 temp..

Not sure how much water I should hold but my lines are only 28mm.

Yeah thats what I meant

Had a quick look and found one of the cooling hoses had a kink in it

I always thought it may kink but hoped it wouldn't, so I've ordered a proper bend, should be here soon Grin

Just waiting on the caliper mounts and then it should be MOT time

With one of my hoses (thin Gates stuff) I was worried that it may collapse. I got some galvo'd wire, wrapped it around a suitable bit of tubing to make a 'spring' sorta thing and lobbed up the pipe.
It hasn't collapsed, dunno if it would have without the mod - who knows
