What sort of air filter set up do you have ? My first run was with a makeshift air filter and it misfired alot.

Hello Brian,
Do you now know that your fuel pressure is correct? As you've changed regulators at least once, I think I'd be looking to measure the actual fuel pressure just to prove whether ot not excess pressure is the cause of the rich mixture. I'm trying to think of other possible caused of a rich mixture.
We have probably cobered this before, but does it idle at around 800 - 900 rpm when cold? If so, this should drop to around 600 onve the engine warms up. This is easily noticed if you start from cold and let the engine warm up at idle while listening to the rpm. If it does drop when warm. this is the cold start circuit switching off. If it continues to idle at 800 - 900 rpm, then I would guess that the cold start circuit is stuck on, causing a rich mixture. This could be caused by a dodgy ECU temperature sensor (the one with 2 wires) or possibly by the cold start wire (to the spade terminal on the starter motor) being permanantly at 12V for some reason.

Have you checked and eliminated split induction hoses as the cause of error code 49?
Strange how error code 49 doesn't seem to go away when you reset the ECU, I can't think why.

Been a couple of months since I've been in the garage but I need to get the van mot'd soon, so I will go over my problem. Van failed mot emissions co 10%. I am getting 49 fault code (MAF) I've got 3 MAFs and 2 ECUs. I get .3v output from the MAF measured at the MAF and at the ECU ignition on about 1.2v at tickover. So I assume MAFs are ok. Now I get the same fault code (49) even if no MAF is connected so I am now thinking I've got 2 faulty ECUs or a wiring problem I know richard has not touched the MAF wiring and all the wiring checks out continuity/resistance ok or is it that the fault code does not erase by dissconnecting the battery any help/ideas much appreciated. Thank you....Brian

Hello Brian,
Your ECU is a 4 plug early 90's model, 22611 AA670 I believe? Was the harness from a manual or auto donor car? Some of the early ECU's were used in both auto's and manuald, configutred by the harness.

Looks interesting Brian. Could be what we're looking for! Working on the other end of the van - I've got all the dash out at the moment to put right previous owners wiring "efforts"...

Silverbullet - Do you have error code 49 too? If so, what part number is your airflow meter? The info linked to above explains what error code 49 means and why it exists.
Regarding rewiring to get rid of error code 49, my opinion is that if Subaru went to the trouble of creating an error code just to tell you that you have the wrong air flow meter on this particular engine, my guess is that they really didn't want prople to use the wrong one for some reason - i.e. they are not interchangeable. For this reason I wouldn't get in to rewiring the harness to suit the MAF you have just to gte rid of error code 49.

I have recently had a look at a Beetle (for 'betsy' on here) which has the same ECU. It initially had 4 error codes, but not the '49 - incorrect airflow meter' code. The Beetle has 22680 AA190 airflow meter. I did a bit of work on it including resetting the ECU a few times, and error code 49 never appeared. Therefore it looks like it is the right one for this ECU. I believe Syncroparge has tried a few airflow meters, as he knows the one he started with was not the right one for the engine, but not this one yet. We've been e-mailing about this this week, and I believe he's now looking for a 22680 AA190 to try, rather than rewiring another model to get rid of error code 49.

Like Richard said if you've got a22611AA670 ecu I think you will find you need a 22680AA190 maf. I found one today fitted and HEY PRESTO!!!!! everything is spot on emissions 1.5 co MOT next week I will let you know.
Thanks for all the help.....Brian

I have the same ecu 22611 AA670 A11-000R97 (very early, integral fault code lamp) See page 2 for my symtoms, which include a code 49, which I was putting down to a persistant air leak when hot...
The bus came fitted with a 22680 AA160 / A36-000 R60 MAF, Green label.
So it should always have had a AA190 one?
Anyone know a source for these?

Ah you could be in exactly the same situation as syncroparge then. It seems a big coincidence, but it's quite possible if whoever supplied the parts / installed the conversions had lots of parts and incorrectly thought the AA160 MAF went with that ECU I suppose. It's possible to tell from the harness whether the original car was manual or auto.
I assume your conversion has no lambda sensor too then?
The AA160 MAF is probably the most common of all, used on many EJ22's and EJ25's, but I suspect the AA190 one is very uncommon. I'll be finding out how the AA190 in the Beetle is wired soon, out of interest. It'll be interesting to see if yours and syncroparges are wired the same. I suspect they are.
Assuming your MAF is wored the same as the Beetle, I can't really see the point of rewiring the AA160 MAF to get rid of the error code. The two are clearly not meant to be interchanged, otherwise Subaru would not have created an error code and added wiring specifically to tell you that you have the wrong one. My guess is that even if you sucessfully get rid of code 49, the engine will still run exactly the same, as it still has the wrong MAF.
The only MAF I have lying around is an AA160. If I had an AA190 you'd be welcome to borrow it.

I bought 2 legacy auto's both had green 160 maf's I kept all the parts from one for myself and sold the other one on none of the parts were mixed up so obviously some one had fitted the wrong part in the past. With the legacy having a cat would it have got through an MOT I'll take mine for an MOT next week and keep you posted....Brian

P.S. it might be easier to find an ecu to go with the 160 MAF, if it would be possible harness wise.
