After replacing the bottom 8inches of my bus and lowering it the above setup was not practical as it dragged along the ground :P So the next setup uses the same small deep rad with a scoop, twin Motorbike fans and is located just in front of the G'box. It works ok but requires heaters on when the weather gets a bit warm (not great)

My setup. There is also a long scoop in front of the rad which comes down about as far as the bottom of the rad. Unfortunately the photos of that are on a currently dead computer. For now you can see the rad, some hoses and the crappy blockoff plate I fabricated. |

i have this set up fitted to my bus which uses a golf 1.8 gti engine running on lpg but the fans come onafter about 2 miles did your fans come on that soon i,m running the rad infront of the gearbox am i better of relocating the rad to the front and using an extra water pump or ditching this idea and going a different route if you can give me any guidance that would be great
thanks tony

I had a manual overide on the fans and left them on permanently and it still overheated on warm days without the heaters blasting out... I think moving nearer the front is your best bet I'm not sure if the issue with this set up is that the lack of anywhere for the air to flow behind the rad (though this would be no different to a car set up) or the fact the scoop was so far back or the rad was a bit crap.. probably a combination of all 3... when it was up front with the air going straight through it it was fine.
It seems between the chasis rails with a decent sized rad and a scoop (see Elusive Stanger's set up) is well proven or if your up for a bit work try and fit it behind the front panel ! _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

| right i,m now going to get the garage to stick the small radiator with the scoop infront of the beam where the po had it on his old bus and another rad in the rear opposite side to the battery or i have a subaru radiator which i could fit in between the chassis rails is this worth trying as i,m not doing it my self and paying a garage to do it |

Is everyone using a single core for their busses? Anyone running a dual core? I know Berrie is running a Golf 3-core. _________________ EJ20 Turbo bus build |

Just gave my new rad set up a good trial down to cornwall and back. It's two vw T4 rads ran side by side, completely flat, with a scoop directing air above. Took a bit of head scratching to fit it in as it's wider than the chassis rails, but the rear mounts detach so that the scoop can be removed and the inlets at the rear of the rads just fit in where the chassis rails taper out.
The fans are two universal fans, 10", which are very lightweight - for this size of rad area they struggle a bit. When I let it idle - they took around 1:45 to take to switch off (10 degree step on the rad mounted fan switch) but I haven't stopped and heard them running at all and, compared to the fans I used on my last set up ( a single T4 rad with 2 T4 fans) they hardly have any effect on the alternator.
I fitted a new waterpump ( I read that the newer pumps had a more efficient impeller) and a new blue tank cap ( again, I've read that the black caps pressure release can go/release pressure early) and the combination meant the van was flying along lovely, sat at 88-90 on the dial most of the time and then a little more on the hills. Expansion tank level was very settled.
Next job is to take it all off and get it powdercoated! Was in a hurry to get it ready for cornwall last week so just didn't have the time.
Also fancy trying a thermostatic oil cooler? From what I've read on the yank vw diesel site the oil temps are what drives the temps on hills. |
