hi chaps,just thought i would say hello,my name is mike and i live in dorchester dorset,i just happen to come across your site by acident and find it very intresting,ive been dieselfied for the last 9 years in my bay all ford motors of course,starting with the 1.6 then putting a low blow turbo on from a p100,then a 1.8 n/a engine and finally a hybrid escort/mondeo lump,1.8 turbo intercooled,it goes very well and is quite good on mpg,ive also fitted a beetle box and 205/60/15 tyres on merc wheels,but i think i have the same problem as every body else THE COOLING,IVE TRIED ALL SORTS,ive just put twin rads in the back again with big scoops on the outside,i put a rad on the front which i used a sattelite dish to cover,ive used a ldv oil cooler under the front bumper and ran water through it,i also have had a mini heater up in front with me,but always with the same result,runs cool up to about 50/55 mph over that it gets hot and starts to boil,but its nice to boot it now and again and over take a few people,top speed round about 85/90,keep up the good work,somebody will resolve it one day, mike

How does the van run with the intercooled mondeo lump? I'm thinking of upgrading my 1.8d to the 1.8tdi from a mondeo. Grin

Hi, Is this Mike Pool? Would be suprised if there was another mike with a ford diesel in dorchester. I'm steve harris's son - the one with the ropey morris minor van. I've started looking at putting in my excort engine - having a few problems with adaptor plates though so looking at using the escort bellhousing and making up an adaptor plate. do you still drive your van to the depot? wouldn't mind havin a look at it at some point. with the cooling i'm planning on putting my rad on the roof! got an aluminium vw transporter rad and fans and making up a frame on a roof rack, and running copper pipes up the rear air intakes. hope it will cool it.

Jag XK40 rads seem to work well underneath. See my piccies in "Show us your rads - Buses"

I've just been down to Devon and back (275 miles)
Thurs I left Medway at 17:25 and got to Barnstaple at 21:10, fan came on 5 times. Once on the M25 in traffic. Mainly sunny and warm.

Came back today (13:00 - 18:00) and it clicked in a couple of times. Sunny, lashing it down with rain then sun again.
Never got near 100° on either journey

Fan came on for 5 - 10 mins at the most. Temp gauge generally sat at 85-90°, me generally sat at 75mph Wink

Really clean out 2nd hand rads, this one cools sooooo much better than the last!

hi darren,alex and i think its tom(steve harris boy)yes it is me and yes i do still work over dcc,many thanks for the answers that you have given me,drove the van to work on monday and guess what it got hot,what temp gauges are everybody useing ?im using a mini one at the moment and the mini sender unit complete with the ballast unit which fits under the dash,i will put some piccys on later,im just rubbing down some australian front doors at the mo hopefully will be sprayed soon so as i can fit them on,should be back on the road at the end of the month cos the tax runs out on my bx, mike

should give you some ideas: (apologies if youve already looked)

seems a good few people (some in Oz) use the belly mounted option so i would recomend that option for reasonable results with minimal work.

any pics of your van then?
