One thing you should consider when choosing an engine swop in the beetle or van:
I'm insured with HIC and have put a T25 1.9 engine in my 72 bug.
The extra insurance for this engine fitted with twin 40 dells over the original 1.6 lawn mower engine was 0.
If you use an alternative vw engine in your bug/van they are lumped into the same insurance bracket so a 2.1 FI WBX with 112 HP is considered the same as a 40hp stock 1200 Laugh Out Loud
I did ask what the premium would be had I put in a subaru lump and was told lots more dosh.

That means I am driving around in a 100HP bug for 0 road tax and 120 fully comp insurance Grin

Bugger. I thought I'd mentioned this on here before. (I know I have a few times - can't find them now)
I rang FJ's about bunging a Scooby in the bug (135BHP) wouldn't insure.
Asked about a Type 4 (said 140BHP for kicks) & it was 40 extra!

They quote you for the donor vehicle, then give you discount as it's in an old VW.

It's almost as mental as Gordon Brown giving away free road tax

Just Thought I'd make an update on this, because it doesnt seem to be true anymore!

I have a golf engine powered bay and HIC now base the insurance on the original engines vehicle, so rather than it just being a 20bhp power increase on a camper, its now a vw golf insurance group!

So I pointed out the T25 has a turbo diesel engine the same, its also a high golf insurance group too.

I am going to shop around and may look into the companies above to see how its done!

Just got a quote for a 1.9td golf engine in a t25 and it came to the same amount as a 1.9td engine in a 90's golf.
Can't afford to insure either now which is a bugger. Sad
