I am starting to think beyond gear boxes and engines to brakes and suspension.

What I would like to achieve is a lowered bus with an IRS rear end and with disc brakes on all four corners.

I like the idea of using Porsche discs and callipers as they work well and look cool Happy Using Porsche brakes would also mean the PCD etc would be changed, so I could use Porsche wheels too Happy

Have seen conversions using Porsche 944 brakes and was wondering how to go about doing this on the front and the rear. Which parts need replacing / modifying etc.

Would appreciate any info or links to articles describing the process and the parts required.

Hello elrao,
I run a splitty with the mods you have in mind so I can give you an idea of how I went about the upgrades.
There are a lot of options available now, from almost bolt in conversions to fabricating most of it yourself. The first option is fast but expensive and the second the opposite, cheaper but time consuming.
I chose to change my suspension front and rear to Bay window, this gave me ball joint front and disk brakes, IRS rear and drum brakes. I later changed to disks all round.

As to running lowered suspension, I used to run my van quite low but very quickly found the ride to be too harsh for comfortable traveling so raised it with the beam adjusters until i reached a compromise height. It is possible to run very low and still have a good ride, but you would have to tub the wheel arches to allow for the suspension travel, loosing interior space and more fabrication work.

I hope this helps a little, everything you want is not only possible but has probably been done by someone on this forum so trawl through the articles and ask away.

Thanks Neil

I still need to make the trip round the M25 and come and see your van!

I don't want to go too low, definitely not into the territory of needing to modify the wheel arches. Dropped spindles with disc brakes at the front and IRS with discs on the rear will do me fine.

I like the idea of the 944 upgrade as you can use the whole suspension arm on the rear inc. discs, carriers and callipers etc. am just now sure how these arms fit in with the rest of the IRS conversion and how best to go about it.

On the front, modified 944 hubs fitted to dropped spindles is probably the way I am looking to go at the moment.

I will be out and about at various events this summer so should be able to meet up, or arrange a time, and take the trip round the M25.

Re the 944 IRS, both jp and richbaker78 have this setup under their Bay's, so I am sure they will chip in with a link to the build up.

Planning to be there, as long as it's not hissing down.
Not a show for modified vans, but not been before so thought I would give it a try.

Should find me in general parking, I will be looking for some new elephant ears, but wont be far away. Bound to be at the van for lunch Grin

Hi there,

I found a Dutch site with very specific info on a "howto" with Porsche 944 brakes.
http://www.vwbuggy.nl/944schijfremmen.htm

The pictures are almost leading the story, so i hope it's enough.
