So anyway I have a 1600 N/A diesel from an 82/83 caddy, it was ok at 54bhp in my van but really as ever I want some more bhp.

I dont see any reason why it can be modified for more bhp, but in places on the net i just get the whole 'its not worth it, you cant really do much with those blah blah' thing back when i start threads.

the otherday someone pointed me in the direction of http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=6 the vwgtd forum which i found huge inspiration, like swedish guys getting a 1.6 TD golf block and going to build it up to 200bhp! most of the time when i post stuff on forums over here I get told its not worth bothering! on that forum seemed anything goes the crazier the better!

The thing I found is people do tune the N/A diesels and originally I asked the question about piston squirters in various places as apparently the 1600 diesel doesnt have them and the TD does, mainly because i thought i would get a TD pump and fit it while the engine is out so I can time it all up, then bolt on a turbo and away I go, I was told its not worth bothering. however I have been told/read that apparently I can tweek my 1600D N/A and add a turbo and safely run upto about 11psi with an intercooler and winding the fuel screw out on the pump! it doesnt make a massive improvement because of the temperature limitations of not having squirters but about 15bhp and some torque is a welcome improvement as I have a turbo kicking about.

I would also consider fitting squirters or building up a funky TD engine if anyone has any parts cheap kicking about

I say - Go for it!
I often hear people saying this 'n' that about engines and mechanical stuff, and in the end they have no clue what they're saying. A diesel is running with abundance of air. There's always room for some more diesel!

I have an old Fordson Major tractor from mid 50's. I also have seen the same engine running 350 hp tractor pulling. Everything is possible.

Looking forward to tinkering with my Scort 1.8TD when I get it in the bus... I played with the fueling on my old Mondeo TD and it made a massive difference (relatively speaking of course). I'm hoping by running a charge cooler I can crank the boost right up

I know what you are saying about the possibilities of improving your 1600 N/a motor

Yes with time and money you can do all sorts of things to any engine to make it more powerful and faster etc etc

But in the long run, what do you want from the vehicle

Good mpg?
150 mph?
0 to 100 in 4 seconds
All things are possible
But
For a reasonable cost just fit a 1.9 turbo intercooler vw diesel

It would make a vast difference to the performance of your vehicle and is not too difficult to do

But if you feel the need to play

I personally have a 1.9 N/A Peugeot motor in my T25 and when I get round to it will change it for a 1.9 TDI or if I can find one a 2.1 TDI from a zantia

It does approx 42 mpg with a top end of 75 mph

Both values will be a bit higher with the TDI motor in

I picked up a 1.9 Peugeot TDI for 75 quid
Gota get round to fitting it
