A few more details might help.

oops! its a 1975 bay window. the loom is a 1990 sierra dohc and has one main power lead into the ecu, which ideally i would like to use off the ignition switch.
can i do away with my vw voltage regulator?the fords alternator has one inbuilt.
thanks, mike. |

Yer you can definatly get rid of the voltage regulator but not sure about the rest-i have a ford dohc 1.8D in my van but I have an early model with no ecu. _________________ www.faltownskateboards.com |

to get rid of the regulator is it simply a case of cutting the wires going in and rejoining them like for like(+ to +, - to -)?.
the dohc uses an old style coil as well as an ecu, just worried that the draw from the coil, electric fuel pump and ecu may be too much for it. ive had a poke about with a tester and the vw coil lead seems the only switchable feed in there. i could wire in my own switch and put in a seperate feed, but would this not mess up the ecu, rebooting it at every start up? cheers, mike. |

Dunno if your ECU's similar to my Scooby but here's what I did.
Wire up the ECU memory to a perm live.
Use a relay, switched via the IGN switch to power up the main relay (injectors, fans etc) and the ECU Power On supply.
When you turn off the IGN the ECU is still feed it's memory power & doesn't draw much current _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

| thanks for that. ive been on the sierra websites and it is similar to yours. they are helping me with the ecu wiring. as a matter of curiousity/interest, the live wires to the vw coils(on the old vw loom), would these not already be relayed as they are ignition switched, i was hoping to connect these up to the ecus switched power. thanks, mike. |

I used the coil wire for my relay, I don't think VW used a relay, mine certainly didn't (78 2 litre factory fit)
I went relay as I was switching 3 relays, prolly overkill. If you get one that's fused you instantly have another immobiliser _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

yes, one imobiliser mite help!! numpty question approaching, brace yourself..............
ive never fitted a relay, are these to power more powerful items using thicker wire from a thinner switch wire, ie a loom wire? cheers, mike. |

Yup. Little current goes in to "flick" the switch. The "switch" carries alot more current.
