|
|
Hello,
I am a new Type 2 Camper owner - literally had the van about 2 days now !
I am looking to convert my van into Diesel, as at present it seems to do 22MPG and doesnt pull well at all, 65mph seems to be the max, up slight inclines it struggles to stay at 40mph.
basically, I am requesting knowledge of the suppliers of the conversion parts necessary to complete my project. I have seen the Ford 1800 diesel seems a good idea due to it being very basic & easy to wire up.
So Parts I will need are:
Clutch / flywheel Converter
Engine Mounts
Petrol Tank ? - Surely it will need an electric Pump / return?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Regards

Welcome fella.
Best you tell us what year as the chassis changes on a late one.
Check out JP & Nobby 7's posts on diesel installs. I'm sure they will be along very shortly! _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Baically off the top of my head what you will need is :-
A adapter plate to mate the gearbox with the engine
A Bearing Spacer
Extended Input Shaft.
(you will normally get the above in a kit)
Engine mounting is normally summut you fabricate yourself I found that using the mounts from a sierra or p100 diesel work well as the engine sits the same way as in the bus... a simple cradle can then just be made to hold the engine up and in place.
Fuel return is simply a case of putting a hole in the top of your tank and poking a pipe through (no fuel pump required)
You will use the Ford Clutch, Flywheel and starter which is nice.
Look at Nobby_7's rad set up that seem simple and effective and is the way I'm looking to go.
Definatley worth keeping a look out on Ebay as they do crop up every now and then don't they Steamo he managed to pick up the plate, shaft and spacer for 50 squids.
Another thing you might want to take into account is putting a hatch above the engine see here as this is pretty essential although mine was fitted orignally without one and just a small square cut out to enable me to top up the oil it did look nasty but did the job for testing purposes. _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

Thanks for the info. It seems almost straight forward to do this job, and ideal winter project!
One issue I am having is the need for a 2.0 gearbox as it seems the 1600 will be too lower geared.
the adapter on ebay is currently at £140 ish.
hmm |

Wouldn't worry overly about G'box I ran mine for a couple of years on 1600 box and was fine, I may change my tune when I fit my 2ltr box. _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

I have just won the engine converter to allow me to run a Ford 1800 Diesel in my van. Lots of money at £155 + £15p&p but I am thinking they are not the easiest to get hold of.
This will be a winter project though, as I want to get the VAN Mot'd and get away in it pretty soon.
Currently in the middle of a service - Tappets next...!

Tappets on a VeeDub are a POP. You can be around 45° either way off TDC and still get them spot on. The cam does one revolution per two rotations of the crank. Take a gander at base radius vs cam lobe diagrams, there's approx 180° of cam base before lift happens.
I was looking forward to not doing tappets on the Subaru but mine has manual valves. Scooby's are funny things like that. Still it's only 16 that need checking once a year _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Morning all,
Just a quick question, after spending the last few months welding i think my vans ready for its MOT.
So next is my plans for the diesel engine.
I have the ford adapter, but want to know your thoughts on Turbo or Non-Turbo 1800cc engines.
Whats the performance gains etc?
Regards
