I am thinking about installing a 091 early style gearbox , the linkage at the moment is for the watercooled 4 speed. If i use the 091 box does the linkage have to be changed completely ? if it does will the fuel tank need to be dropped .

I have another customer doing exactly the same thing at the moment. The back section of the gear linkage is very different on the 091 4 speed compared to the 094 4 speed. You may be able to get away with only swapping the back section, but I've never tried. If you can, I don't think you'd need to take the tank out.
