This is a home made split charge system I found on the internet-Sorry to the guy that designed it as I cant remember were I found it or the guys name.

This system is designed to charge both batteries at the same time. If one of the batteries is full then it will concentrate its charge on the other. This system works really well for people like my self that have a lot of thing in regular use off of their leisure battery. i.e big sound system and air compressor.

Hope this is of use to any one-all the bits you need cost about £5 from maplins.

Dunno why you've got a diode there . Current's gonna flow through the coil between 85 & 86 anyway.

It is because when the contacts open you get a back e.m.f. (electro motive force (Voltage) and the diode stops that voltage getting back to the alternator.

I'll find the link to the guys sight as he goes into it in more detail

Split charging relays like this are what we have in our works vehicles and actually in America (of concern to me as I work for an American Co) this type of split charging system is illegal!

There is a safer way of doing it but I can't find the paperwork for it right now (have drunk too much to go and get the paperwork from my workshop) I will get it out tomorrow and will see if I can either scan it or the guy has a web address!

Oh and the main reason that won't work very well is because if your Leisure battery is flat, then the Alternator will try and chuck as much power down it as possible (upto 70 amps or more) especially for us guys who have modern alternators on our vehicles!

There are far more modern and safer ways of getting a split charging system into your vans and for not much money either!

Here's a link to a modern system can cope with upto 180Amps does that sound more like it than 10Amps?

The only difference between this kit and the first example in this thread is the size of the relay and fuses. They are connected to the batteries the same way though.
