|
|
Any tips for changing over the ball joints? it's proving to be a pig of a job so far, gave up last night at 12.30 as I was making too much of a racket!
I've tried using a scissor type remover in situ, but it won't fit. I then tried locking the gap between the two torsion arms, and then tightening up the ball joint again, to pull it out - it wouldn't budge. I've taken the torsion arm off now, so i tried heating again and giving it a huge whack, with no joy. Think i've just going to have to cut it down and use my mates press!
Cheers |

nice one cheers, i've stripped off the torsion bars now (night mare of a job again, it looks like a previous owner has cussed and chiseled the threads as a cheap alternative to loctite ) , and will give them to my mate to press tomorrow! I better remind him about lining them up properly!
Thanks

Use Tippex & mark the arms and new joints as to where they should align before you give them to him _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

you can get ball joints out yourself in 5 mins. there is a bloke on you tube who does a how to. you simply grind the back of the b joint then knock the threded section into the joint itself and it comes out of the back (the way it went in) then it leaves you with a ring of steal in the arm. you can either run a weld around the inside on fthe ring then bang it in cold water (contracts and drops out) or you can cut a slot in it with a hacksaw. the knock it out as the pressure than goes due to the slot cut in it.
or like the other guys say. find a man with 50 tonnes _________________ most bad experiences ive had included cars that werent german. never again |

that looks too simple to be true! awesome way of doing it.

The arms are with the fella with the press now, i'll have a chat with him - if he's struggling with one (the lowers looked incredibly rusted in) I can always switch to that technique!
Cheers! |

Yet so pointless!!!! he has a press because he uses it to press the new balljoints in. _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

| i got them back from my mate today, neither press he had would touch them, just too rusted in - he got to the point where he felt the thin ring on the torsion arms could crack. I ended up using the method in the vid and had them out in no time. |
