im wanting to put a 1600 or 1900 td engine into my bug running on the existing gearbox, now ive search and read and it seems i can use the diesel t25 flywheel which will fit in my box, and i can make a template up for the adaptor plate.
Im just thinking its unlike VW to just use a specific flywheel for that one model, now from memory im sure a couple of my old mk1 golfs had the same type of flywheel and clutch setup(not the backwards around one), has anyone tried one? im currently trying to source one to check at the moment.

im hoping to get it fitted into this

the t25 flywheel is specific to the t25 but it will not fit unmodified in the type1 bellhousing as the ring gear is to big. the convensional golf/polo mk1/2/3 1.1/1.3 flywheel is much smaller/lighter than the t25 one

cheers for the reply, i thought id read that it just needed a little bit of grinding on the box?

i originally thought about the 1.0-1.3 golfs and polos but the ring gear is on the other side as the starter motor is mounted on the engine side not the gearbox side.

you would need more than a little griding to get a t25d flywheel in a bug box

what engine you wanting to run in the bug? the 1.0-1.3 engine only had a 200mm clutch max which wont hold that much torque

I thought the T25 one does fit a bug gearbox? I know theres the guy on here with a 65ghia and GTi motor that runs a 190mm T25 flywheel/clutch as I bought his 225mm passat flywheel off him as it was too big.

This is an issue I am currently looking at as I will be running a GTi motor in my beetle, have a Passat flywheel/pressure plate and will probably look at using the Type 4 225mm bus centre plate.

however this may mean I have to use a bus gearbox!

t25 never had a 190mm clutch the diesel has a 215mm clutch

Hmm strange, I wonder where I got the idea it was 190mm from then?

didnt late 1303s also have a 215mm clutch? I know they are supposed to all be 200mm but I was sure that there was some oddity that the later ones came with 215s.

either way I know that theres the chap with the Ghia running a 65 swing axle box and a GTi lump with a t25 diesel flywheel and home made adaptor, because I bought a passat 228mm flywheel off him because it wouldnt fit, but the bus one did.

obviously 228 will fit in a big old bay bus housing from what I understand as thats what some of the type 4 engines had a 228?

you might be thinking of the small golfs with convensional flywheel they are 190mm.

i doubt a 03 had a 215mm clutch it wouldnt need it as a bug isnt heavy enough to warrant it? unless the bug engine you saw originally came from a bay with a 215mm clutch?

the 228mm 02a passat flywheel will not fit inside a 091 or 002 bay bellhousing without massive grinding i know as i have this setup in the split

dont get hooked up on clutch size its the ring gear and flywheel size not the clutch size that is the problem the 228mm type4 flywheel is much smaller and a totaly different shape to a 228mm passat/golf 02a flywheel and has 2 extra teeth on the ring gear

I think I have been sold far too much duff information Laugh Out Loud

I havent tried fitting the flywheel I have I bought it based on what I was told, to clear the adaptor plate mind it might need some machining!

Depending on design I guess I could get a beetle ring gear machine/pressed onto it.

would that perhaps be another route to take, get a bigger flywheel and get the outside machined down to accept a stock bug ring gear if enough material is availalbe, although then there is also the pressure plate clearing the box which could be an issue.
