Hi all... I am getting to the point where the subaru WRX engine is being fitted to to my Rancho Performance bug box. I will try my normal bug starter motor, but doubt it will be up to the job?

If I get a high torque starter motor, is there any reason why i should go for the geared/more expensive one, rather than the chrome/non geared/cheaper one?

Surely they are both 'high torque motors', is there any real difference? Both should start the WRX engine without problems?

I seem to recall that it is fairly easy to adapt a starter from a golf tdi, I can't find a thread at the moment to back that up but I'm sure someone on here can verify this.

Oh really? thats interesting!

Would it be close to a straight swap or woudl there be fabricating required? I have just done a quick google search, but came up with nothign unfortunately... If anyone could shed some light on this, that would be appreciated?

i did this with my last bay (theres a old thread tdi bay) but it was with a 091 box and a diesel engine i think i looked into this when i had a type 1 box in split with tdi engine and i couldnt get it to work due to ring gear spacing etc? the proper hi torque starters lawn mower starters are mitsubishi style starter with the reduction box on its end with a adaptor plate (have a look round scrapyard for something jap with same pinion gear as vw?) there is a website (?name?) that uses a bosch epicyclic reduction starter with a adaptor plate that would be easy to copy Grin hope this helps
