Gearbox Info and Photos - 002 / Type 1 / Type 4 (411/412)

Hi all,

Just thought these photos might be of some use to anyone considering some different gearbox options for conversions (mods feel free to move if I've put it in the wrong place. It also just give me a chance to put up some photo's of the VW 411/412 gearbox - you'll be forgiven for never have seen one as right now there are no photo's of one of them on the internet. The 411 transmission (or 004) was a bit of a pre-runner/prototype to the larger 002 box it seems.

Type 4 411/412 input shaft is a smaller diameter than a T1 or T2 box.


Type 4 gearbox is small, like a beetle box, but much stronger across the centre (it looks more like a 002 in the middle) and comes with the larger 100mm output flanges like the Type 2 gearbox. Its apparently a much smoother/quieter gearbox


A very low selector rod / hockey stick position on the nosecone means the body of the gearbox would sit nice and high up.

I'll post some gear code and ratio info that I have gathered together too shortly.
