I am using a regular 30 85 86 87 relay for my fans. my connections are:
30 and 85 +12v. 86 to 17 on B44 ECU connector(ground switch). 87 is +ve feed to fans. (EJ20 2ltr turbo)
My questions that in the fan off state, 12v is present at the 86 connector which means that 12v would be present at 17 on B44 ECU connector.
I know current won't flow unless the circuit is completed but it feels wrong to me so I haven't yet connected B44 to the ECU. The wiring does however seem to work fine in that if I ground 86 the fans come on.
Any advice??
Thanks

Sounds fine to me.

You've tested it by effectively grounding the ecu signal wire, this is all the ecu is going to do anyway by completing the circuit.
