3rd time around the engine has been lowered again and I think the hight is about there yes I know it looks on the piss but the drive goes one way and the van the other its true measuring off the van.well near enough anyway.. home made A arm brackets fitted and when its all up and running I will put a few spots of weld on. drive shafts in place just to get a idea on the exhaust.I have jumped up and down on the rear end and its till in place must be a plus snowed off bring out the sun

Hello there.
It does seem genuinely low indeed....
Have you measured the ground clearance?
I know you have been around for a while, do you have another thread? Or does this just pop up, out of the blue? _________________ 1973 BayWindow running 1.9 110 bhp TDI with flipped gearbox. |

hi Wilfred yes it dose look low but I have tried to keep it as high as I can but at the same time keep a good angle of the drive shaft, the first two attempts seem to steep for the drive shaft to bolt on. because I have gone bay irs on the rear until the pdc 5x112 to 5x205 adapters get here I will not no if I dropped a big clanger or not fingers crossed it should be 6inches of ground clearance but until its back on the wheels I am just guessing if not I not sure what I will do any higher and the drive shafts will not bolt up. No build thread but I will add onto this as I move on, my fingers were blue working out in the snow this weekend LOL _________________ the weekends are never long enough |

What is an acceptable angle for the driveshafts?
I haven't really looked into this on my van... _________________ 1973 BayWindow running 1.9 110 bhp TDI with flipped gearbox. |

The drive shaft angle is the killer with this conversion.
It's a stretch no matter what way it's done. |

it's a flipped audi box no?
I am not sure if there is a way to flip just the differential in those boxes (I have one in my vanagon, but that configuration is different), but if the box would be the right side up the axle shafts would end up lower and the engine would end op higher. It;s the shape of the gearbox that makes the shafts go up and the engine down. |

still waiting on the pdc adapters should have been here today until I get the van down on all fours I can not judge the ride hight for the engine or drive shaft. when the spring plates go up the angle should improve for the drive shaft _________________ the weekends are never long enough |

According to a supplier that I contacted in the states, the maximum continous angle of a bay driveshaft joint is 17°.
Mine are set at 15°. You really need to get it sat on it's wheels on a set of ramps to compress the suspension before you set the final position of the engine. |

I went for highest ground clearance, and didn't really care about driveshaft angle. Actually, I find it hard to believe there is no solution for this. There have to be heavy duty drive shafts that can handle a bit of an angle right?
I am gonna look into this.
For now, just carry a set of driveshafts as spares :-) _________________ 1973 BayWindow running 1.9 110 bhp TDI with flipped gearbox. |

I get ware you are coming from maybe carry one drive shaft on a long distance trip but then you would need all the kit to fit it and a other van to carry that in , _________________ the weekends are never long enough |

still waiting on bloody just kampers to deliver the parts to get my van back on all fours so while I wait dong some of the other bits .
to day he engine lid before
during
and after
it needs tarting up but its in and functions best 40quid spent off ebay.
looking at the engine from a diffrent angle I can see it is tipping forward a bit so needs dropping a bit on the gear box when and if the parts ever arrive I will give it a go. next job need to be looking at the exhaust route. _________________ the weekends are never long enough |
