GTI early bay

HI - Pics of my van mid resto should be appearing below I hope. Its an 8v k-jet GTI from an early scirocco, running with a 2 ltr 091 cogbox box. Quite a few other modifications too- im hoping to get it 'finished' in the next few months - it was all running before for a year or so but I had to do a bit of a rustoration / respray. Most of these pics are some time ago now - the engine now runs and im not too far from MOT. DOnt get on the net much so apologies for delays on any questions.

I'm about to embark on a watercooled conversion. Struggling to find any adapter plates for

Rich has given me some information already. Still a little confused though.

I think I can obtain a 1.8 Mk golf engine (aparently the same as the GTi but without the "i" which suits me.)

Currently I have a 1.6 Gearbox - not ideal I know but I'll keep it for now if poss. If I get the engine I'll have the whole car (accident damaged).

Would you mind confirming which bits you required to do this conversion. Any info you could divulge would be most apreciated

steamo - I know jace wont be here for a while but I helped him strip the scirocco so Ill try to help. First off tho - Jace used to have a non injection passat engine before the GTI conversion but TBH it wasnt very satisfactory power wise - go GTI if your gona bother - you can pick up very cheap MK1 engines. I paid £75 for Jases complete GTI scirocco.

main bits JAse uses Scirocco/golf heater matrix and blower, engine inc K-jet system, fuel pump, starter, fans, exp tank, and other odd bits and bobs

other bits - he uses a t4 transporter rad mounted across the back hatch (cools well but being revised for looks), a mini heater in the back, homemade engine support ladder bar type, exhasut made out of kwik fit skip bits, adaptor from the place you phoned that doesnt do them any more, mdified petrol tank for fuel return, er thats about it. I know having the whole car though turned out invaluable for spares/ odds. Engine wiring wasnt too bad all done from haynes - rememebr K-jets dont have ecu - so you benefit form injection without the hassle. Hope that helps a bit more - Ill tell jase to get his arse on here!!!

Ahhhh - again it comes down to the adapter plate!

gonna try phil for the pug adapter kit next. Still up for information for any of the convertions though.

Really nice bus, jealous of your back lights, vents and valence. Mines a '72 so just missed out.

Can't wait until mine is looking like that - gotta long way to go though.

Was goin MTBing tonight but just had the inspiration to go to my lock up and do something constructive for a couple of hours.

Steamo.
If you go for a type 25 diesel bellhousing, oil pick up, sump, and starter, you could bolt a nice 2.0l 16v golf engine in the back. Swap the inlet cam for a mk 2 1.8 16v get a decent exhaust manifold and exhaust and you would be putting out close to 150bhp. Grin

Most of my budget is going to be blown on the bodywork - thinking realistically I'm going to have to get someone in to do some of the work. I just havn't got enough time to get it finished this side of 2020.

Somehow I don't think I'll be able to afford a new gearbox to take that kind of power - plus I can get a 1.8 8V Golf engine for free. Is it possible to fit this engine using the same parts.

If so this is very promising as the scrappy round the corner has a couple of T25s - one could be diesel.

you wont need a new g-box - jase was running a 1600 for ages hes only gone up to 2ltr as £ and time has allowed. a standard 2ltr can be found fr £100-200.

im with lister - if your gona do the work making your bus lookin nice spend a couple £100 more and make it go nice too. Every scrappy in the world has a GTI in - while yer down there getting your t25 bits have an ask - see how cheap they are. go on you know you want to really and your running out of excuses Wink

Yes you can use the same parts for the 1.8 aswell. But your only talking about the price of a good night out to upgrade to the 2.0

Well I am very tempted. But surely even the 1.8 would be quicker than an lawn mower 1.6. plus surely it would be dead easy to whip the 1.8 out and pop a 2.0 if I felt the need.

I have the feeling that going for something that powerful will require oodles of cash for bigger brakes, uprated suspension etc etc.

Having said that, if the original brakes will hack it and I'd get away with just dropping the van a bit.

These are my last excuses!! If I'm wrong 2.0 it is.

A well set up braking system is suprisingly effective, and if you chose to go to rear discs in the future i'm sure you wouldnt encounter any problems Grin

And surely dropping the suspension on the van is manditory Wink
